not happy with our college list (Case, Tulane, Dickinson, UF)

The acceptance letters are coming in, most with scholarships, and we should be happy and excited but daughter and I are not crazy about any of the colleges on her list. Maybe it's too late, but does anyone have any other schools she still might be able to apply to? She is smart, very quiet, would probably do better at a small to medium school. She is not sure of her major but would like to study Japanese, maybe international law. SAT 1390, ACT 30, 4.2 weighted GPA, PSAT commended student, AP scholar. Not many ECs. Volunteers as church webmaster. Would like a school small enough to not overwhelm her but large enough for her to explore various programs. She liked Stanford and Dartmouth but they are way out of her reach. Dickinson looks the best so far but the cost is staggering and I read somewhere the ideal student is an extrovert. My husband is pushing UF but she would prefer a little more distance and less party atmosphere. Thanks for any help.

I'm with you on UF.......can't imagine being an introvert and going to a school with 40,000 other kids.....there's another thread (parents forum I think) with a great list of liberal arts colleges in the South......might want to check it out....

Fewer parties, Japanese, small school, introvert?

Earlham. (but applications may have closed - you could call them, though.)

She'd be ok at Case - students are relatively serious, not a major party school, close proximity to all the cultural institutions.

I've also been looking into this and here's what I've come up with.

Gettysburg College (PA) is a small liberal arts college that has a Feb. 15 deadline.

Muhlenberg College (PA) same

TCNJ - NJ state school with good regional reputation - Feb 15

University of Scranton - rolling admissions after dec. 15

Towson (MD) Feb 15

I think Wagner College in NY has March 15th deadline

I think you are wrong to dismiss UF as a "party school". Sure, it's a large school, but, along with that, there are a very large number of dedicated, very hard working students. This year's freshman class has 259 National Merit Finalists in it...2nd highest total in the country. Your D, even if she is an introvert, is sure to find a large number of students similar to herself with which she will become good friends. I think you owe yourself, and your D, a visit.

Take a deep breath. You are having a case of buyer's remorse. I think that Case is a very good school, high academics.
The University of Toronto (excellent) school takes apps. until March 1, high academics, low cost. Web address is www.utoronto.ca
University of Kansas, also good academics, low cost www.ku.edu
Lake Forest, in Illinois, has March 1 deadline
Loyola U., Louisiana, Rolling Decision, still open
UNC-Asheville, North Carolina, March 1 deadline
Ohio Wesleyan., Ohio, March 1

and on and on. Good Luck. Don't go crazy. Plus she can always transfer.

Try Goucher just outside of Baltimore - she'd qualify for merit money there and it's a nice friendly school that is markedly less "preppy" than Dickinson.

I may be wrong, but Goucher's deadline was Feb.1

juniata college in pa...i think its like march 15 or something

Earlham's date is February 15 (so there is time). Japanese, international study, non-party, introverts (after all, they are Quakers!) pretty much typecasts the place.

I know a functional, amiable but introverted/shy young lady who graduated from Dickinson and is happily employed in DC with many friends and Dickinson grads in and out of her life still...
costs are high, but keeping your "eyes on the prize" .....outcome will be a self-supporting, confident person who can go to grad school or find employment. Dickinson is worth a chance..offers community, rigor, and outstanding language instruction. The extroverts are everywhere on every campus and always dominate the first impressions and first weeks of the college whirl, so it is just a matter of setting sail in your own personality and beginning. Things settle out. As time passes, people choose friends based on intrinsic qualities and your daughter will be valued. Your introvert may be appreciated and may bloom in that balanced size of a school community. good luck!

Check out Franklin & Marshall for late applications. www.fandm.edu

Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions. I feel much better about our current list, and just to be safe my daughter is doing a last minute application or two to some of the schools you all have suggested.
