Not just another chances thread....

OK, so i'm an international student looking to get into Pomona, CMC and Pitzer. Yeah, you could say my main focus in life right now is to get into one of the Claremont colleges.

My SAT's: 670M, 670W, 710CR.
I just did my math IIC today, dont think I did so well, so I'll be retaking it along with my world history on december 2.

My EC's:
guitar-7 years
karate-6 years, currently brown-IV but will have my blackbelt test in a couple of weeks.
Editor-in-Chief of school newsletter
First Place in fashion designing event
Annual Cross Country(participation)
Have had my art put up at two small-scale exhibitions
Participated in exchange programme to a high school near Boston
Community service includes volunteer work(mostly kitchen duty) at a nearby shelter for the homeless, time spent with visually and mentally challenged children, helped conduct a survey on solid-waste management in my town, also participated in a campaign to spread awareness on aerobic and anaerobic composting and other environmentally sustainable methods of waste disposal, etc.

Does participation in athletic meets count if you havent really won anything(except maybe one or two, like a third-place for high-jump in my freshman year)? I didn't think so.Also, is it worth including random achievements like first place in an essay writing competition in eighth grade or w/e?

and oh yeah, do I have any chances of getting into CMC or Pomona?

good scores. lots of good EC involvement. yes, athletic participation counts even if you're not a star athlete...it shows dedication, work ethic, etc. i think you're a good candidate in general, but i think you need to think about why you would be a good fit at either school. from your ECs, between the volunteer work and the art and the fashion desiging, etc...none of those exactly scream CMC or Pomona. I'm not saying you wouldn't be happy at either place...almost anyone would...it's like a country club where you go to classes. think about why you want to go to pomona or cmc though. if you're interested in being an IR, gov, or econ major at CMC...make it clear in your supp essay? this sounds harsh....but it just seems like you're not very driven in any one area.

I'm an artist and I'm also supposed to be a good writer. I play the guitar. I get myself involved in activities that involve creativity( eg:fashion designing). But how does that mean I'm not focussed? I think I would qualify as an 'artsy-type' person, and aren't Pomona and CMC excellent LAC's? I hope having multiple talents/interests makes me a more eligible candidate rather than making me seem 'not driven in any one area'. But thanks emm, and I will make it a point to make that clear in my essay.
