I live in NYC but commuting from my home (Staten Island) to Fordham Rose Hill campus is a ridiculously long commute (like 2.5 hours???) I checked on campus housing when I applied but when I was accepted, they did not offer me housing “at this time”.
They gave me a full ride to fordham which included a 7k scholarship as a commuter…
But if I really want housing…what should I do? They gave me more than a full ride to cover my tuition, and i won’t mind paying for the difference.
Try to get other students in the same boat together and rent an apartment close by? I would think their facebook page would be a good place to start. What do other commuting students do? The scholarship they gave you is most likely to help defray those costs.
Find the Facebook group for your year and join and see if anyone wants to go in an apartment. You don’t necessarily have to get one down the street, Riverdale is a short commute also (on the Bx9) so maybe you can find something up there also. Look on Realtor.com and put in 10463 and 10471 as search areas. For 10463, I suggest staying around the Broadway area and west of that. Also, if you really REALLY wanted housing, maybe contact ResLife and see what you need to do to get you into housing if not this semester, maybe next? Be open with choices, you might be placed in the campus owned off campus housing. You never know, maybe something will open up with housing. Good luck.
Contact ResLife and see how to get on the waiting list for on campus. You can ask for help in finding off campus housing as well. Note that if you move on campus you will lost the commuter grant plus you will have to pay for housing/meal plan so it will be a big difference in net cost. I know some people who keep their commuter grant and use that money towards an apartment right off campus and it can work out OK.
