Not so good GPA. ANy chance to CMU?

I visited CMU during this spring break and LOVE it ! I've been visited more than 10 colleges so far and CMU is my dream school.

I'm a junior.
GPA: 3.30 weighted (my sophomore GPA is so bad because of moving to a different school, different state. But I keep my junior year GPA up-trend, almost traight A except AP Latin)

SAT I: M 800, R 750, W 750, Essay 7 (I will take the 5/1 test, hope to improve my essay)

SAT II: Bio 770, Math II 800. Will take Physics this June.

ACT: 34 (again, essay 7). I will not re-take ACT, will focus on May SAT.

AP: European History 4 at sophomore year. Will take Calculus BC, APUSH and Latin this May

Senior schedule: English, History, Religion, Multivariable Calculus, AP Physics II and AP Economics.

EC's:
Regional & All-state orchestra violin since 6th grade
Youth Symphony (very competitive one) since 4th grade
JV Baseball since 9th grade but did not make it this year due to injury
Science Center tour guide for more than 100 hours
Formed a chamber music group for charity
Robotic Club - the one I spent a lot of time. Love it!
Other clubs like BBQ, Latin, Japanese, Wall Street.....

Two seniors from our school this year will attend CMU, their standard test scores are much lower than mine but their GPA is around 3.60 (mine is only 3.30)

I took honor pre-calculus at sophomore year and got a C+ but teacher still recommended me for AP Cal BC this junior year and so far I'm A-. I work very hard on AP BC test, hope to have a 5.

I'm thinking about CIT or IS. Do I have a chance?

Very good chance at IS, CIT is a match, I’d say. Depends on what area of CIT - ECE or another kind of engineering?

ECE or EPP.

Is there difference for admission ?

ECE is the hardest major to get into within CIT. If you schedule an interview though and explain your GPA you have a shot.

How about EPP ?
What’s the chance to transfer (from EPP or other department to ECE)?
Thank you !!!

You can’t have your primary major be EPP; it’s only allowed as a double major or a minor. That means you’d have to major in ChemE, CivE, ECE, MSE, or MechE in order to get a double in EPP or BME.

RacinReaver - Thanks.

I think you’re a great match for CMU. You have some very solid SAT scores and ECs. The only thing hindering you is your GPA. Focus on your coursework for the rest of your high school career and hopefully that’ll bring it up.

I hope you have some good essays and recommendation letters.

Best of luck.

I am very jealous of AP Latin and getting to take Calc BC as a junior. My school is pure silliness.

You definitely have a chance. Just make sure you explain the ways the cards were stacked against you GPA-wise, and you should be fine. Good luck!

Noblerare & GhandiBurger : Thank you!

I also applied for CMU AP/EA summer program. I sent my papers around 3/25, I haven’t got anything from them yet. I called this morning, they said have to wait few more days. Is this a bad sign?

I know my GPA is my weakness, so I really want to do the summer program at CMU and will work very very hard to prove them that I can handle it.

The worst grade I got during my high school years was Honor Chem which I got a C- during sophomore when I transferred to the new school.

Will this hurt my chance for ECE? My friends in CMU told me CIT will look hard at your math and science grage.

ps: I did great at honor bio and honor physic. Teacher already recommended me for AP physic C next year.

I got in with a 3.22, and I didn’t have the EC’s that you do. I had more AP’s, but my EC’s were music and running rather than robotics n’stuff. So I think you have a chance.

EDIT: and my sat was like 2120

Take difficult courses at pre-college, earn As and then apply to the early action program-- high admit rate and non-binding. Read through the threads – seems like students have had success with Early Action. If you earn Cs…you got problems. Bs iffy…

If rejected Early Action you can reapply RD to a different school within CMU and transfer once here.

ECE is very hard to gain admittance…if you can take Intro to ECE this summer and earn an A, you’ll have a great shot…but it is a weeder class…it is NOT easy as students can surely confirm.

I got into CMU, my GPA isn’t that great but I have good SAT scores (you have better scores than I did). I had a lot of extra curricular activities and both the teachers who wrote letter of rec’s for me loved me so their rec’s were near perfect (I read them).

I also wrote a very unique essay, I spend A LOT of time on my essay.

Just show them you’re good and show them how much you want it. You can do it. Best of luck!

engineering students don’t declare their majors until towards the end of their freshman year. if you get in for ECE that means you have a reserved spot for ECE, however I know this year pretty much all the freshman who did not have reserved spots in ECE all got in.

ECE is hard so a lot of people change their mind.
