Not super selective colleges for very politically involved, *very* liberal student

This student is interested in the Humanities (International Relations + American Studies or Gender Studies or Creative Writing), super politically involved and very liberal (SDA would be “middle of the road/common sense” to her). So, Oberlin, Reed would be a good fit, except academic stats would make those out of reach: 3.5 UW/1180 SAT (670 EBRW, 510 Math with a lot of work on Math), IBD (HLs: Philosophy, English Lang&Lit, History; SLs: Math Studies, ESS, French B - predicted score around 32-33), EC’s mostly political involvement (local and regional leadership). EFC0 but grandmother can help financially (25K?).
What politically active, liberal to very liberal schools would be matches for this student?
I’m thinking perhaps NCF, The New School…???

Maybe look at Guilford, Goucher, Sarah Lawrence?

Also Warren Wilson College might be worth a look–they have a particularly strong writing program if I recall correctly.

Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Portland is very liberal & activist oriented. Plus both the city & the school are gorgeous.

University of the Redlands (California), Hendrix College (Arkansas).

Smith College.

If Washington resident, Evergreen State seems like that kind of place.

The GPA is not bad. How about adding some test optional schools. Bard college sounds like a great match. They are test optional and have some alternative application paths. I know they have one where you spend a day at Bard, do some writing, participate in a seminar and get an immediate decision.

Also take a look at Hampshire. Its part of the five college consortium, test optional and very liberal from what I understand.

Thanks! All super ideas.
Keep them coming.
(It may even be useful to other kids with that profile).

Occidental?

Beloit College in Wisconsin has creative writing. Lawrence University & the University of Wisconsin-Madison should be considered.

The University of Oregon.

I would second Beloit. I ran the NPC with a 3.5 GPA and $0 EFC and got a $16k net price. Good IR program.

Portland is having issues with protests turning into riots in the city parks every weekend.

yes, Beloit. College of The Atlantic, Sarah Lawrence, Union College, College of Wooster, Denison University?

Union College?

Add in your local state school as a safety.

Yes, she has safeties. But this is a new development… and the current list of matches doesn’t seem to be the right “fit” anymore!! (Half “old fits” are staying on the list just in case of another change of priorities).

@Publisher I think Lawrence is maybe a little too “middle of the road”’ for this kid.

Hampshire.

She’s not a hippie though. Love and weed wouldn’t be solutions for her - she wants action, now.
You might remember a time in your life when adults seemed to be so static or compromised, governments and policies so depressingly slow, etc.
(To understand, I try to remind myself of this feeling expressed by the student from Parkland who said “But it’s been TWO MONTHS and they still haven’t done anything about banning weapons!” Because clearly two months seemed like an eternity to her and she was scandalized at adults and lawmakers dilly-dallying.)

American University. Apply early for best odds.

Evergreen, Skidmore, Oxy
