So I have lived overseas in various places for about half of my life and I want to write about my experiences moving all the time and how it affects me etc. I’ve had a lot of trouble coming up with essay topics or if I should write directly about this or just one specific event. I did have an idea to use a metaphor to show how I think about my life and how different places have affected me. The best/most unique one would be using kite flying (Afghan style), though this analogy would be cool, it’s not an activity that I’m really into or anything. I have flown/fought with kites when I lived there but it’s not an EC that I do or anything like running is to me.
Do you all think this would still be a good essay idea? I can explain the metaphor more if it helps.
I think maybe your topic is too broad-- you’ve moved a lot and had some cool experiences.
How about picking ONE of them-- like maybe kite flying-- and talking about how you’ve realized that each culture has its little things that bring it joy. For an American kid it might be a grand slam in kickball, for an Afghan kid it might be a great day flying his kite. And that maybe this has made your world a lot smaller as you realize we’re all really the same.
OK, kind of trite, but you see what I’m saying. Take one small experience you’ve had and make it an example of a larger lesson.
bjkmom has a good point.
Here’s a few random ideas I got off the top of my head after reading your situation:
-How each time you move makes you a new person and how you reacted to your new environment(s)
-What hasn’t changed about you each time you move
-Take the best parts of each culture, briefly explain/break them down, and then talk about how it positively shapes you to be a ___ person (optimistic, loving, open-minded, adventurous, etc.) This is a good time for analogies or metaphors like you were talking about
-Or, talk about one time you moved and how it changed how you thought about things. (Make it as personal/deep as possible.)
Good luck!
