Not sure if it's worth applying to TAMS

I just moved to Texas at the beginning of the school year, and since I’m a sophomore at a junior high I’m looking into schools to go to for next year. I found TAMS and I really want to go, but, I didn’t do so well from grade 7 to mid-grade 9.

My grades were pretty much straight Bs except for As in English & Math. They were so low because of a pretty stupid reason, the work was so boring because it was easy that I wasn’t motivated at all and didn’t try. And although my current courses aren’t that much harder I got myself motivated and am doing better. I’m currently taking all honors (AP World History, Pre-Ap English 2, Pre-AP Chem and Pre-Ap Geometry) and am getting low to mid-90s in all of them and high 90s in my electives (Theatre Tech 1, Health Science & Prof Comm) but I’m worried as to how my previous grades will hurt my chances.

My final and largest issue has to do with courses. I didn’t know about TAMS when I was doing my course selection, and so I didn’t take Algebra 2. I can take it online but I would have to pay about $340 for each semester, or $680 in total. My mom wants me to take Algebra online as I really want to go to TAMS, but I don’t want to waste her money if there’s no chance of me getting in.

I’m so confused by your post. How old are you? Algebra is required to graduate from any Texas high school. And is tams. Tamu?

Maybe it is this @AggieMomhelp

I’m also confused. Are you a sophomore in highschool? Or are you in 8th grade as implied by “junior high?”

Are you a year behind in math? Confused about “not taking algebra”. Kids take algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2. Sometimes in that order. Sometimes alg 1 then 2 then geo.

Are you female? Have you taken a practice sat, if so what is your score? I would suggest taking algebra 2. Even if you don’t get into TAMS, you’ll be better prepared for the sat, and be able to take more advanced math classes which looks good to colleges

@AggieMomhelp @one1ofeach TAMS is texas academy of math and sciences, its a accelerated early college experience program in which you spend your 11th/12th grade years at UNT and take college courses. Op seems to be a sophomore and has yet to take algebra 2 (in texas it is generally alg 1,geometry, alg2)

I know About TAMS from other posts on CC. What I’m confused about is the age of the poster and not taking alg 2. If a sophomore isn’t taking alg 2 is a math school really the place for them?

Sorry, I realise the way I wrote my post is a bit confusing.

I’m currently 14 and a sophomore. I took Algebra 1, and am taking Geometry, but put off Algebra 2 so I could take some other required courses.

@AggieMomhelp @one1ofeach

Oh gotcha. Somehow this showed up in my feeds so I was thinking it was for TAMU.

Best of luck with your high school endeavors. Good for you for being so on top of it! Keep up the good work!

Sorry for the late response.

I am a female, I took an unofficial practice SAT (I took an online one at home) and got 1450.
