I got an offer to help teach some kids (for free) at a Chinese School summer camp. A for profit organization, so it doesn't give volunteer hours to me. The owner of the place promises she'll write me a letter of recommendation for working there. Now I don't even know if colleges care about that, especially since its a for-profit. Opinions?

whoa … working at a for-profit company in exchange for a rec letter may be in contravention of your state’s minimum wage laws.

Well its not actually a job. My mom’s friend is a teacher there, and its really just me helping out for which I thought were volunteer hours until they told me it was for profit.

If you’re not getting paid, it can still be volunteer work. Or an unpaid internship?

Right, but it won’t count for hours with my school since it’s for profit, so it doesn’t benefit me in any way. And I don’t know if I can pass it off as an unpaid internship. It’s just a small summer camp and the owners don’t have solid credentials or anything like that.
