I am going to be in band the upcoming year as a freshman. I just went to band camp for one week and I think that band will be extremely challenging. I did not have a good time this week; I felt the marching was confusing and I am having a hard time understanding it. I do not think I will be able to get a spot to march in this years show and I may end up on the sidelines. I LOVED middle school band, but high school band seems to be a whole new ballgame that I don’t think I will like. But I feel like it might be too early to make any decision, because the year could get better. Should I take band off my schedule so I will not have any future regrets? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Adding to what I had above, I really don’t want a bad high school experience and I feel that band might take up too much of my time and I will not be that good in it.
You may regret not accepting the challenge, an forever wonder “what if.”
Dos your school have band practice most of August? If so, I would stick with band through the summer and decide when school starts. Band will give you a built-in social network. You wrote that you LOVED band in middle school…if most of your friends are in band then it might be difficult keeping in touch if you quit. ECs are an important part of high school. If you quit band, then you need to commit to another activity. And remember, marching is only part of the band experience; there is concert band in the second half of the school year.
Thank you so much for the ideas! My school does have practice during August so I will make my final decision after that and not quit right now. Also, I agree that it would difficult for me to find another extracurricular to commit to.
