Not to rain on the happy parade of UVA, but....

Uh-oh.
C'ville Police Investigate Madison Avenue Shooting

Oxford Hills is a student complex between Rugby and the Corner, a bit farther out than most student complexes. While this sounds like it wasn't random and it was somewhat provoked, it's a reminder to people to keep an eye out for themselves and others. Again, C'ville isn't a city full of rainbows. While major crimes like this are few and very far in between, thefts occur a lot. Be careful and be aware of your surroundings and don't put yourself in a bad position.

Well that's lovely, that's where I live. If I disappear for a week.. you guys know what happened to me.

[/end morbid humor]

But really, I'm not concerned, even when I live in the next apartment complex down. We've got a pretty good and responsive police force, they'll do something.

Nothing gets me more riled up than worthless, violent townies...

peasents...

I grew up in this town and also go to school here. Most "townies" as you call them, which is an offensive term BTW, are not violent at all. Furthermore, there have been several incidents in the past few years of horrendous violence on the part of UVA students. I won't even talk about the vandalism of certain "townie" neighborhoods by drunk UVA students out partying late at night. Have you ever seen the movie "Breaking Away" made in the late seventies? I think you should see it. You sound like the kind of student that the "townies" complain about. That said, this town has violence just like every other town in America. You can't always insulate yourself from the real world, sorry to say.

That's why he didn't say "all of them worthless townies". And what horrendous violence? All I can think of is that shooting. Lots of incidents happen to UVA students by non-UVA students. And, if people don't want the drunk vandelism, move farther from the university (and that's hard to believe anyways, since most residential areas are nowhere near the Corner/Rugby).
And, UVA has turned C'ville mostly into what it is today. There's no way someone can say C'ville would be better off without UVA. We complain about the townies who steal, rob, mess with us, etc. The town has very little to complain about us students about, other than the weekend stupidity, which is fairly isolated. We give back to C'ville, the hospital is funded by UVA, tons of money is pumped into the area, etc.

Citizens of Charlottesville who rob and assault the future doctors, businessmen, politicians, lawyers and professors that UVa produces are indeed worthless, violent townies.

They are the same low-life thugs that seem to exist in every city and now seem to find college students easy marks. Most of the college towns I am very familiar with have seen an uptick in street type violence. The usually liberal leaning college town residents and politicians are having a tough time dealing with this new reality.
