Not your typical Asian, Chance at stanford

Ima be colloquial a bit hope you guys don't mind. I understand fully how competitive the selection process is, I also understand that I am by no means a super strong applicant. I'm Asian, I'm a second gen university student, and of all the instruments i considered i chose to play the violin. Not saying that i don't enjoy playing the violin, I love it, but if i had known how generic it is among asians i woulda played the drums or something (which i also love, but don't play the Viola though hahaa if you get this joke your cool). But, personality wise I'm not your typical asian nerd, my parents don't really care, they just tell me not to fail LOL everything i have done in life i've done on behalf of my own interests. I am super outgoing, and I'm a part of all the hip hop culture good stuff that kevjumba's dad preaches against. Not the blingbling and booty nonesense, real music and rhymes about life, stuff i do for fun with a few of my bros who are less concerned with going to a top school. (Of course, i will be making my personality very clear in the essay)

As for my school, its ranked around 60 in the province, which is good, but only because of our IB program, aside from the IB kids, a lot of kids are in gangs and even more don't care about school, to stand out, all you have to do is hand in your homework. But the IB kids are pretty legit, every year we have 1 or 2 kids that go to Yale/Harvard/Princeton and a few more to Cornell and Berkeley.

Hope that gives a rough jist of my backgroud, by all means i would love to provide more info to aid your judgement.

(some insight needed here, i have depth for most of my ECs but i don't have that many, whats the consensus on which is more important here?)

Job/Work Experience:Summer work in a dental office, Desk Job

Volunteer/Community service: Hospital, homeless shelter, 500-700 hours?

Summer Activities: Intern at a Stanford research initiative in china done in cooperation with the chinese academy of sciences. It's called Rural Education Action Project, basically random intervention and research for more effective social development and aid efforts. I'm doing it right now, mostly desk work, but come december I'll go on a field research project into the mountainous and poor regions of china with the REAP team and we'll be conducting some of the research i helped design. The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies is heavily involved, and i will likely get a very good recommendation from the project head who's a prof at Stanford.

(A key question here, would this be something significant and really helpful for my app to be a likely admit? as in something that pushes my app over the edge? or is this really amateur?)

Teacher Recommendation: will be quite good, my Bio teacher is like my bro LOL I've done a lot with my history teacher

there it is, I think I might be missing a few things for my ECs but the main ones are there. I wanna really emphasize to you the passion and enthusiasm i bring .

If you've read this far you are so awesome : D thank you for taking time out of your day

And if I've given you the impression that i believe Stanford actively selects against Asians then I must apologize, I don't believe in the race thing, I think it's just more often than not the Asian students are the ones who lack personality, which is one of the things Stanford looks for. But then again, i'm just another kid on CC looking for a sense of standard and emotional security, however futile that may be. : )

Good chances, I do see the passion.

US schools don’t admit based on expected IB score since admissions are complete by end of March. They use your school transcript as a basis.

Your admission will be based on International admits and not as an Asian in Canada.

Really? Our school gives a Predicted mark around december though?

Can you graduate high school without taking iB? If so why does college care?

Your school is providing the college with evidence of how well you are doing including a predicted mark. However, no college is admitting you based on a prediction (you may never even take those exams for all they care unlike UK where they give you conditional admission). They are essentially giving you an admission based on your school transcript, SAT scores, ECs etc.

bumpbumpbumpbumpbumpbumpbump

impressive stats, but not too impressive compared to everyone else. Stanford…is just random. Unless you are like the number one in one of the big competitions, it’s kinda based on luck. You have passed the basic standards, now you might just want to cross your fingers and wish for luck (also, make an amazing essay always helps). With your stats, go apply for a bunch of top colleges and probably at least one will accept you

I’m number one at the district and provincial levels, but not that great at nationals, meh…

IB predicted scores are important, but much more important for European universities.
If you’re doing well, your predicted grade will just be another thing that will help you in the process.
Also, I’m sure your school has some type of GPA conversion from the 1-7 scale to a standard GPA scale. My school has the conversion, so I assume yours does too. Strangely enough my school doesn’t give a GPA though even with this conversion… they want the adcoms to do it themselves i guess.

wow so a 7 is a 4.0? to get a seven at our school you need around 96-97%…whereas a 6 is more around the 93 range.

Can anyone answer my question about my summer activities?

Wooow, and you think my ECs are good?! That internship with Stanford, if brought out properly, could really boost your chances!

And no, i’m not from vancouver lol. I’m a from a tiny city that no one’s ever heard of.

One question, why don’t Canadians want to go to good Canadian schools like UToronto or McGill? Shouldn’t you support your own country’s schools?
