I'm thinking of buying a desktop for college, but many of my friends recommend purchasing a notebook. If I'm going to be living on campus, is a notebook really necessary? It's not like I'll be carrying a it around campus, since I'll only be working in my dorm room or apartment. Another factor is the price: notebooks are much more expensive than desktops for the same specs. If I were to purchase a notebook though, which ones would you guys recommend? Keep in mind that I'll only be using it for word processing, the web, photos, and CAD applications.

For notebooks, IBM and Toshiba are probably the best

one thing to consider is whether your school has wireless - if so a laptop may be a better choice if you think you would take advantage of the wireless

There have been numerous topics on this... do a search.

Personally I use a laptop everyday and have a desktop sitting over on the desk collecting dust. I will be getting a laptop and a tablet (or MAYBE just a tablet) next year. So much easier to transport, much easier on the eyes, better on space... I don't see any downfalls except they're easier to steal... but that's why I have insurance
