We won't have hard numbers on how many semi-finalists will be seeking the artist scholar designation until the dust has time to settle a bit. What I can tell you now is that about 220 submitted materials for consideration in that category by the deadline.

We have a few more to notify early this week but the numbers will likely be small. I will post for sure when we're done. We think we're nearly finished.

What all of you need to know is that this process is not something completed by sorting all of your data on an excel sheet and choosing those who end up at the top of the page. It is done by reading all of your files. It has been a heculean effort to get through them all this quickly. We're tripping over each other in the file room trying to find files and the folks who are doing the filing--trying to get all your various pieces of paper in the proper place--are also tripping over each other. So I know it seems like a big mysterious process and that it should be easy when a piece of mail comes in just to open it and stash it in a file but think of it with buckets and buckets of mail. It can take all day just to open it and alphabetize it all. Much less starting to file it. So there is always a lag time between receipt of your materials and when we can actually take a look at the file.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day to you all! Peace!

Is to not have gotten an email by now to say you won't get one? I'd be (and am) quite surprised to not even make it as a semi-finalist. I'm not one to egotrip, but I'm almost shocked.

I guess chances are slim at this time; I haven't received any notification either. Oh well.

By the way, when Richmond makes decisions on who gets the Richmond Scholars does it also decide who gets in ? Or does Richmond review its pool all over again ?

I suppose all finalists can get in, that might be sort of likely letter/admitted decision. Just my personal opinion

Also, UR Admission... How many Richmond Scholars will be awarded. I think there must be someone who gets the scholarship but choose not to attend. So how many wil be awarded?

Yes, if we bring you in as a scholarship finalist, you are going to be admitted.

And yes, we will offer the scholarship to more students then we expect will accept it, just like we offer admission to more students then we expect will enroll. We don't release the number of offers of scholarships and the truth is that I don't think it has been determined quite yet. There are many factors that go into that calculation.

Yes, as of this morning, all semi-finalists have been notified. I know that there are many disappointed students out there and I'm sorry about that. Please know we've had a huge increase in applications this year and will have by far the largest applicant pool in our history (numbers are still not final, but it looks like we'll go over 7500 applications when our previous record was about 6600) so we're trying to figure out what that means for you and for us (we did not score a corresponding increase in staff to answer phones, process materials, and read these apps so we're all looking at massive extra work). Just because a particular student wasn't invited as a semi-finalist does NOT mean that he or she is less likely to be admitted. We're still opening the mail down here! We've got to figure out the context of our total pool before we can make real decisions on all these applications. So bear with us and we'll have you all notified about admission decisions by April 1. Continue posting questions, but there is no way I can explain every internal working to you guys, much as I believe in transparency.

If a student is selected as a finalist we expect them to visit campus and participate in the interview process unless there is a really compelling reason keeping them from doing so. We would hope the student would contact the Director of the Richmond Scholars program to discuss the conflict. It would be the director's decision how to work with that student. If the problem arose for an international student who was unable to travel because of visa issues, we would arrange for a phone interview. A domestic student wouldn't have a similar sort of conflict so they might be less likely to be that accommodating. But again, if it were a compelling situation, we would want to understand it and see if there were a way to work with the student.

This is how Richmond does most things--on a case-by-case basis.

Well, it would seem the par-tee's over if we've not heard about th Richmond Scholars program by now. :( 'Twould seem the Mighty Cassie has struck out . Bummer.

If my daughter is fortunate enough to be selected as a finalist would she be required to visit the campus for all three days or is there just an appointment on one day?

Students would be expected to arrive on March 18th and depart on the 20th. There are events, interviews, facility tours throughout the three day period.

I realize everyone is anxious but no, we have not yet contacted finalists. We hope to start that very soon. I will post here when we begin. Thanks for your patience. These are hard decisions and we don't want to short change anyone. Hang in there!
