Finalists will be notified by e-mail and postal mail (only domestic addresses will also get postal mail) by the end of February. The campus visit will be March 18-20. Students selected for the scholarship will be notified starting the week after the visits.

For international students I know this seems like a tight turn-around for students from places that require visas but we've always been successful at helping students get visas quickly so they are able to travel here for the appropriate dates.

How about semi-finalists? When should they know (so we can know when to let go of the hope of a Richmond Scholarship)?

We expect to have notified all Richmond Scholar Semi-Finalists by the end of next week.

Thank you.

You mean even international applicants are "eligible" for the campus visit? What about the costs? I don't have enough money to pay for a flight to the US (even if I'd love to...).

The campus visit is paid for by the University for all finalists regardless of where they live. So if you live outside the United States and are selected as a finalist, we will buy the plane ticket, we will provide transportation to campus, your meals while you are here and anything else. You would want to have a little money with you for things you purchase in airports where you are changing flights and maybe you'd want to buy a Richmond t-shirt while you are here (but actually we even give you one of those so no need to buy unless you want one for a friend), but we cover your costs even if they are expensive.

Thank you so much, that's great news! I do hope I'll be among the finalists.

How many students would you say have already heard, and how many do you have left to notify?

Thanks!

We aren't going for a specific number of semi-finalists--we are looking for certain qualities in the students we review and whatever number that gives us will be OK. Our goal is to get everyone read this week who applied by the deadline and that is no small task. There are some students out there whose applications made it in by the deadline but they did not submit something required and therefore we won't get to review them (either a transcript, test scores, a rec letter or the supplemental essay for those who used the common app). I hope you've all checked your application status on Banner Web to be sure those things are all in our hands. (For you folks who didn't make the Richmond Scholars deadline but are just now applying, don't worry if your materials aren't here yet--there is still time for you but please try to be complete by Feb 1 if possible and get semester grades in ASAP after that). If you are hoping for Richmond Scholars and your materials aren't here (please check on-line if you can, our phones are ringing off the hook) then you might not be considered. But the deadline was 12/15 and we've given people a lot of time to get their materials here, so we feel that has been more than fair.

I think we've notified about 450 students of semi-finalist status so far and we're predicting around 750 by the time its all said and done, but again, the goal is not in that number but the qualities in the students. If there are more, that's fine. If there are fewer, that's fine.

UR Admissions

care to say what those qualities are by any chance? :-)

jbrown...you can visit the Richmond Sholar webpage for answer I suppose ^_^

UR Admission...will it be possible to review Int'ls first and then we can have notification earlier and then to tackle visa problem. Anyway, just suggestions.

Yes, the qualities we're looking for in Scholars can be found at University of Richmond: Merit-Based Scholarships.

As for notifying internationals earlier to deal with visa issues, all I can say is that we're well aware of the issues and do everything in our power to get appropriate students notified at the earliest possible moment. But international students are competing to become finalists within the total applicant pool, not just in an international student applicant pool, so we can't read those earlier than the whole group can be read completely. We've always been successful at getting students here from all over the world on time even if we have to call the State Department ourselves. You won't be working on this all alone.

Oh! I just received the email!

I think this is what heaven feels like. :)

From past experience, of the roughly 750 who will be named semi-finalist, how many will actually submit the additional materials required to be considered for finalist?

Typically about 700 of the 750 who've been invited will submit materials to be considered for finalist.

About what percent of the semi-finalists are applying as an artist scholar?

Have all the semi-finalists been notified?

Congrats Miss Sunshine! Crossing fingers, off to check inbox.

Aw, thanks.

Good luck to you as well! :)
