Notification of UFE

Hiya.

I applied for the UFE and I was wondering when we are supposed to hear if we are a finalist?

I know they said end of January, but does anyone know when the decisions come out normally? Also, are they emailed or mailed

Thanks!!!

In the past, they came by snail mail, but maybe now they’ll come both ways. I think they get sent out around Jan 21th.

thanks mom2collegekids…somehow I knew you would know

i applied, but unfortunately doubt i’ll be invited to the weekend. my application essay wasn’t the greatest. i do think they said late january.

^^^

Will you come down for a campus visit another time? I think you’ll be surprised by the campus. It’s really nice. :)

If you do, be sure to contact the Honors College, in addition to scheduling a campus tour. Jami Gates at the Honors College will make other arrangements for you, such as meeting Dr. Sharpe, sitting in some Honors classes, tour the Honors dorms, picking you up from the airport, etc. Jami’s number: 205- 348-5599

Tres-I’d assume you’d get invited over me…you got in Yale EA did you not?

Wow! Congrats! Awesome!

yes, i did get accepted EA to yale. i’m still weighing my financial aid options, so i have yet to send in my deposit (and won’t until spring–and maybe won’t ever submit it to yale, depending on what i decide financially, despite my unending love for yale :[). the essay i wrote for the UFE is not nearly as good as my common app essays. i submitted the same essay with some editing to a local scholarship and was rejected from initial judging (~50% of the applicants were forwarded on to the next level, and it was solely merit-based–which i don’t think is a good omen).

@mom2, if i am chosen as finalist for UFE weekend, i’ll visit, but otherwise i’m not sure. i’ve applied for several other institutional scholarships, and if i qualify for multiple scholarships i’ll be making three or four flights in six weeks (may go to NYC for spring break too)! what with my work schedule, that will be incredibly difficult! in fact, i’m starting to get concerned about working at all in february/march/april…

I completely understand. The second semester of senior year can be more hectic than the first! College visits, senior trips, Prom, AP exams, etc. My kids had to cut back hours for their part-time jobs just to fit everything in! I was just hoping that you’d have a chance to visit Bama.

BTW…I know time is an issue, but sometimes you can save a lot of money by flying “circle trips” - that’s where you fly to one destination, then fly to another, then fly home. Including an extra destination (or two) doesn’t add much to the airfare. I know that sounds odd, but my H was able to fly from our home to Chicago (for sister’s wedding), then to Orlando (to meet us at WDW), and then back to our home. The airline only charged $50 more for the Chicago destination. Not a bad deal at all! We do circle trips a lot because we can squeeze in an extra destination or two for not much money! :)

i’ll have to look into that, mom2, especially if the scholarship weekends overlap with each other or my vacation! prom and AP exams are mercifully after may 1, so i will know where i’m headed by then! and to reduce my stress later i already have my prom dress. i have a great summer job lined up, so if i quit in late february i’ll only have a few months without income. it’s just that i usually work the bulk of my hours during the weekends, so it’ll be difficult.

The wait for UFE/CBHP seems endless right now. Hoping they might send decisions out early this year but that is probably wishful thinking. It seems like more people than ever before are applying to UFE this year based on the comments on this forum. I know they say they weigh service, leadership, EC etc more heavily but do you think that is really the case? Do the kids who are not NMF or may be HS nominees rather than auto-invites stand a chance against the kids with the higher stats given the prior averages of UFE? Based on the kids on CC that are applying it sounds like UA will have a great group to choose from.

I wonder how many apps UFE got this year. I know how many CBH got, but I don’t know how many UFE got.

their website said that we should be told by Jan 22…

how many applied for CBH?

when is UFE weekend??

UFE interviews are usually held after President’s Day…I don’t know if it’s over a weekend or not. CBH interviews are held on a Monday and Tuesday (the actual interviews are Tuesday, but they have the CBH prospects come on Monday for a dinner.).

Hey guys,

I got an email earlier today notifying me that I’m a semifinalist for University Fellows!
Do any of you know what exactly the phone interview entails?

What did the email say?

Did it say that you’d get a phone interview? Or did it say that you’d been invited to the campus?

Congrats.

I was wondering the same thing. And how many semifinalists did they ask, as compared to finalists they select?

Here’s the text of the email, which was sent at 11:43 AM:

Congratulations, --my name–!

You have been selected as a semifinalist for the University Fellows Experience at The University of Alabama.

Your status as a semifinalist qualifies you for a phone interview conducted by Honors College faculty and current University Fellows. This interview will be a time for us to get to know you better beyond your application. Finalists will be invited to campus February 19th and 20th for the University Fellows Experience weekend for on-campus interviews and will be notified of this status by the end of January; please be aware that we will interview many more semifinalists than those students selected as finalists.

Your interview time is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th between 6:30 and 8:00 pm. Please respond to this email by Tuesday, January 19th to confirm this interview time and to provide us with the best phone number to call during this time. Interviews will last approximately 7-10 minutes. If you are absolutely unable to accommodate this time, please let us know asap and we will work with you to schedule another time.

Congratulations again on your status as a semifinalist for the University Fellows Experience. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions at wlbridgers@ua.edu or 205.348.5522. We look forward to talking with you more next week!

Most sincerely,

Director, UHP and UFE

Wellon Bridgers

Coordinator, UFE

The part of the email that surprised me the most was “Interviews will last approximately 7-10 minutes”. How can an interview possibly be conducted within that time, particularly over the phone?
Is it a kind of test to determine whether or not I’m really interested in Bama?
