Were you waitlisted and got off the waitlist or were you admitted through Regular Decision?
Were you waitlisted and got off the waitlist or were you admitted through Regular Decision?
What did you do between deferral and acceptance besides LOCI?
I am guessing it would be safe to assume anyone “nominated” for merit scholarships are accepted? My son did not receive an email so I am starting to feel uneasy now.
Don’t dispare @Xanthous1, the merit scholarships are very competitive, more so than regular decision admission. Hang in there.
Merit scholarships are only 3% of population
same! im almost positive we are admitted as they said we are the most promising of their applicants and they would not consider giving us a merit scholarship if we weren’t admitted. do you wanna chat about the interview and how you’re preparing?
Thanks for the encouragement. He applied first week in November and this wait is brutal. This is his first choice, I wish we had did EA or even ED.
Hey! I already did my thing on Friday! I admit it is really difficult, just make sure you really prepare in the 45 second section. When you practice on the app/page , you’ll understand what I am saying. Good luck
thanks! and were your actual interview questions as weird as the practice ones? my practice questions were VERY random like one asked about my dreams and another as me to estimate revenue from the 2012 olympics lol.
And the good news is that ND has a very generous need-based aid program. Best of luck to you.
RE: Need-based aid (loan vs grant)
We know ND has superb and generous need-based FA to include meant 100% of demonstrated need. Some schools (Vandy, UPenn) meet 100% “without” any loans. In general, what is % of the aid offered by ND is “grant” versus “loan”? I know that nobody can say with certainty, but just want to not lose sleep about 50% of the aid being in the form of loans. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Go Irish!
My experience - they are very generous. My DS initial FA letter included did not go all the way to cover EFC. I met with the FA laison, laid out my case and they revised his award up. My DS takes subsidized FA, but no more. We pay the difference, which is less than our EFC.
Without providing all my financial info, that is my experience. It is my understanding that ND considers need-based up to a Family income of $250k. I don’t make that much, but do make enough that most state schools would not have provided any need-based aid.
I am pretty sure ND does not use a ParentPlus loan to fill the gap. When you get the letter, review it and call Financial Aid if you have any questions. They are very nice to work with.
Thank you - very reassuring.
Your best bet for estimating need aid is to use one of the estimator tools that the school provides. Google Notre Dame financial aid estimator. This will not only help you predict this year, but future years when you may have different income and/or a different number of kids in college. I have made ample use of the estimators to determine the impact of different situations such as taking a new job, contributing more or less to 401(k) or getting/not getting a bonus.
I think they typically expect $6500/year to come from loans, less when you have multiple kids in college.
I should add that some local ND clubs award scholarships as well. My club (Washington DC area) has an endowed fund that they use to award $170,000 per year to current students. They select from rising freshmen who have qualified for need aid, but the awards renew each year that you still qualify for need. So this is a good way to defray that loan component if you are selected. It’s a bit weighted against oldest siblings who will not have a sibling in college when they start. So if you’re someone who will only qualify when you have two in college, it’s better to steer the middle kid to ND!
One last comment about ND and need–they seem to use the most recent year of income for financial aid decisions. I had a situation where I had a non-recurring bonus one year that gave me higher income than I normally make. I applied for sophomore aid during spring of my daughter’s freshman year, after I’d filed taxes for the year that had just completed (with my income back to normal). ND used that in their calculations, and I received an unexpected chunk of need aid.
Happy to answer more questions and good luck!
Would those admitted after being deferred please share their thoughts on chances of being admitted and when?
Hey, does anyone know when fin aid/merit scholarships come out? i was accepted REA and interviewed for scholarships and another scholars program, but idk when they’ll notify any of the financial stuff?
Do we know when we might hear on RD? Thanks
I think late March…
When was your interview? Mine was due by Feb 14.
I had the same practice questions too. When was your interview? Mine was due by Feb 14.
