Notre Dame, UT Austin, or Colorado School of Mines for chemical engineering?

I have been accepted to all 3 schools and I am trying to decide on the best place to go. I would like to go to Notre Dame, but it is the most expensive and we will not receive financial aid. Seeing as it costs over $50k, I don't think my dad will be able to pay for this as he is already paying full tuition for my sister at Rice. I know UT has a great chemical engineering program, but is it worth sacrificing a Notre Dame education for? I also don't know if I would like the really large school type feeling of UT. However they do have a great study abroad program that I would be intersted in doing. And I don't know that much about Mines, just that it is all about engineering, but it doesn't rank as highly as UT or Notre Dame.

I don’t see why you would go to Mines over UT…unless you’re instate for Mines.

Are you instate for UT?

Can you clarify…you say that you won’t qualify for aid, and that your dad can’t afford to pay for you to go to ND because your sister is at Rice…so, if your dad can’t pay for ND, why is it still on the table?

What is your career goal as a ChemE major?

UT is has a significantly better ChemE program than both schools, and surely is cheaper. Yes, it will have that big school feel. However, you can apply for the Honors Program, which gives somewhat of a small school feel inside a bigger one. If you can’t pay for Notre Dame, then forget about it. UT Austin it a great school.

UT Austin, no question.

Just to clarify, I would be in state for UT and my dad would be able to afford ND, it would just be a little bit of a stretch. If it’s worth the investment, then there’s still a chance I might go there. I applied for the honors program at UT and I’m leaning more towards UT, I’m just kind of wondering whether I should take the risk and take out loans or something for ND. ND has the name and the prestige, but UT is definitely a better value and would probably provide the same career opportunities…tough choice.

If you want opportunities in chemical engineering, you go to one of the best programs in a state that is the hotbed for chemical engineering. Plus its cheaper.

UT has a better name and is considered to be more prestigious in Texas. Career-wise, if you want to work as a chemical engineer, you have better opportunities as a UT grad … anywhere in the country.

As for undergraduate experience, that will depends on your personal perspective. Have you been to South Bend?

Notre Dame has more ‘prestige’ than UT (since that’s really just based on perception anyway), but there isn’t a single academic program at Notre Dame that is ranked higher than the same program at UT.

Yet another vote for UT-Austin. Imo, it is a clear first choice on the merits, even without considering its financial advantages.
Good luck with your decision.

“Notre Dame has more ‘prestige’ than UT (since that’s really just based on perception anyway), but there isn’t a single academic program at Notre Dame that is ranked higher than the same program at UT.”

There are quite a few publics rated lower than ND at USNWR.

I know I couldnt live with myself if I turned down ND and I think it’s well worth the money if you have it (which you do I see)

I couldn’t live with myself if I ever went to ND. To each his own I suppose…

UT by a long shot. People in Texas underestimate the brand UT carries. ND may have a slightly higher prestige within the US, but UT’s brand/prestige carry globally. If you look at the top professional schools MBA/JD/MD, UT grad dominates hands down.

For ChemE, you will have a much easier time finding work as a UT grad, since Big Oil recruits heavily at UT.
