November 2010 SAT - Critical Reading

I have no clue. I noticed the discussion, and when I clicked on it, a message stating that the topic did not exist popped up.

question about the literary technique used to describe the French painter in the passage about the asian artist:
-analogy
-contrast (think I chose this one b.c meaty hands contrasted with frail beauty)
-metaphor
-personification
-?

question about what she remembered (or something like that) about the French painter…
-absorbed concentration
-exemplary skill (ended up choosing this one)

“What would you say was the support in the passage for that? That’s what I initially thought but I couldn’t find anything to back it up. I put the eras one because it said he was active from about 1920 to 1950 then reemerged in '75.”

I believe the flamingo one is striking and the dance move was dazzling.

also currently tormented by:

 1. tinge v. mold v. bent (I picked tinge but now I think tinge refers to colors, rather than shading)
 2. incensed v. pretentious (picked pretentious b.c i didnt know what incensed meant. I couldnt tell from the quote what the tone was, could’ve been either)

I remember obdurate. Does anyone else?

Thank the lords! that means I’m still batting -1

Yes. 10char

I put “adviser” as well for the Langston Hughes passage.

Can I ask what your -1 is?

I also put tinged. At the time, it seemed to fit more in the context of the sentence, but now, I’m not so sure anymore.

For the dancer, I put spanned multiple eras. The passage didn’t really give evidence of multiple dance styles, though you could go either way with this one.

can we try to figure out the quantum physics passage?

I don’t really recall the questions, considering it was pretty early during the test. Sorry, I hope someone remembers it clearly. I kind of lost concentration during the fifth section, since it was three passages long. I am considering canceling my test. My average sat score is around 1900, and I felt I did horrible. I kept dropping my pencil during the first half because I was really nervous, since this was my first time taking the actual SAT.

also for the caribbean passage i remember a question something about how the author discredits the teacher’s opinion?

yea i had reading experimental so i had a lot of reading. i wish i had gotten an extra math section or even writing

-1 is the quotations one from the girl/house passage. I think I just guessed.

The answer was irony and self-consciousness right?

Yeah there was definitely something on the Caribbean passage about teachers, can’t recall the exact question though…

Yeah I think so. I mean like I said I couldn’t answer the question myself so I don’t have a personal opinion on the answer but I think that was the general consensus.

@ alej744: I put variety of styles as well, seeing that it mentioned that his techniques were changing and that he was an innovator. I don’t think he SPANNED several eras, it felt as though he may have influenced dancers later on, but he didn’t directly participate in those years.

Also, it was exemplary skill because it describes how precise and beautiful the flower was.
I put “tinge” because it mostly focused on the shading and the “tinge” of the stem, not as what other people previously mentioned as the “bent” shape of the flower. I don’t even see an explicit reference to the proper shape at all, just an “unevenness” due to “attempted shading”
I’m also pretty sure that the scientist is best described as “incensed” because he was not pretentious (meaning that he was overly showy about false intelligence), but rather that he was aggravated by the the hypothesis.

was the answer something about describing their unattractive response? like the suggestion of knowing both languages would make them like…(i really cannot remember)

That’s exactly it!

ok i really want to remember the quantum physics questions now hahaha
