November 2010 SAT - Critical Reading

Does anyone know the exact answer for the flamingo question?

Yeah, I got the one with Caribbean, Quantum Physics, deception, and the farmhouse renovation. Is that the one you’re talking about?

Yeah that’s the one. There’s a ton of questions from the quantum physics section that we haven’t gone over yet.

Yeah flexible was the one.

It was either striking, or the colors of the feathers. I don’t quite remember which answer pairs with which question.

Legendaerie, bright color, I think.

I remember dazzling for one of the answer choices. Did anyone get that?

Are you sure that there is an experimental cr section ? Because I had this SAT and I’m pretty sure that my experimental section was the writing section…

Striking, right? Not dazzling, because I did not see that choice.

Dazzling was an answer for the short passage about the dancer, I believe.

Passage Comprehension

Man Visits from Northern City
Marriage proposal
woman had complex personality

Langston Hughes
Passage was about one of his goals as a writer
relationship was like moderator?

Farmhouse
The conversation between the daughter and father was a ritual that they often participated in.
Daughter went from nostalgia to indifference
parenthetical reference to lack of quotations on modern-lack of irony and self-consciousness
absence makes the heart grow fonder
both the daughter and the father are conscious to each other’s feelings
author implies that newer farmhouses have a better view of the countryside

Chemical Farming
Both authors agree that world’s population needs to be supported
“That’s right.”- Author acknowledges that her point is surprising
Author of Passage 2 would argue that even using just a little bit of chemicals can produce high-yield crops
Passage 1 offers a solution while Passage 2 offers a moderated version of it

Hummingbird
passage explains why not all hummingbirds have evolved to have long bills

Quantum Physics (grrr……)
nervous=uneasy
visualization affected the work style of one quantum physicist
“shatter question”- showed how old ideas were discredited
First paragraph served to set up the nature of the problem

Caribbean
produced=generated
Government more motivated by commercial than cultural interests
Youngsters idolizing Hollywood celebrities- effect of “cultural penetration” Japanese
Caribbean families are flexible and inclusive
language is tenacious and dynamic
Caribbean ppl often denied sense of identity
To show a paradox set of attitudes (why talk about family and language?)

Deception
Last paragraph functions to make a general statement about the nature of deception
Author 2’s tone was more judgmental
habitually lying dehumanizes the liar
calculated=planned
could/should say= conceivable…beneficial
tone of quote was nonchalant
the 19th century philosophers would claim that lying leads to more vicious and harmful lying

@lovewangzi That was for the bird of paradise-bright color

That’s weird, because I don’t remember “striking” as an answer choice.

To add on to deception:
The author of passage 1 would respond to author 2 by saying deception is necessary in some social situations

Langston Hughes I think is “advisor”

Striking was asking about the color of the feathers, I believe. And dazzling was when asked to describe the dance move.

@Legendaerie, you are right

All I remember was for the flamingo question I chose the answer that dealt with color. Is that the one with striking?

Wasn’t the discussion on this version of the test closed by the mods?

Why would it be closed???

does anyone remember obdurate for a SC?
