@Evangelise Ohh… I will definitely try to look that up on tumblr! What is the author’s name?
I have heard of Dr. Chung, but it sounds WAY to hard for me! I just need a decent score - not a 700 - 800!
The website is good! I have gotten 700’s on the BB official tests, but I am inconsistent with the 700’s which is worrying. I am just going to practice, practice, practice!
What is the easiest section for you?
This is a thread for anyone considering to take the SAT on Saturday, November 7, 2015 in the United States.
Use this thread to discuss preparation tips or any other things you would like to talk about during the summer.
Also, since I am unable to edit posts after the 15 minute limit, and because I know that this issue will pop up after the exam date in October, I am going to put this note up in advance:
NOTE: You may discuss test questions, but do so at your own risk. Do not, however, post links to Google Docs, as they will be removed by moderators. On a similar note, do not ask for them either.
Good luck!
**MODERATOR’S NOTE:**Please note that links to Google Docs or any similar document-hosting site or any chat sites are not permitted on College Confidential.
[color=red]Do not post messages asking for them to be posted or PM’d; the posts will be deleted and the violators warned. Repeated violations will result in a loss of posting privileges
Be aware of the agreement which you made with the College Board which prohibits the discussion of specific questions following the exam. Good luck.
@HighSchoolerDana Haha, for me it used to be reading, now I’m better at math. Search PWN the SAT Q&A’s tumblr and the author is Mike! He used to roam these forums. I hope to raise my reading score, I feel like I second guess myself too much.
Why did the thread get merged?! Not all of us were taking the SAT in the US!
I’m not doing the SAT in the U.S… anyway,
@Evangelise critical reading! It’s really difficult for me sometimes
@ HighSchoolerDana awesome! I’ll ask you if I have any questions then may I ask how much improvement has the critical reader website made for you?
easiest section - math/writing definitely!
Because people keep creating a thread where one already exists. If someone wants to start the intl version, feel free.
@BethanyD I think it has helped! I had only used it like 5 -10 times before I took the October SAT (LOL), but I am using it more seriously before the November SAT. When I get my scores for October I will tell you exactly how much it helped! But be SURE to print out a copy of the frequent SAT words/roots on her site!! That REALLY helps if you just read it over like once a day.
My main issue is the passage part >:( does it help with that?
@BethanyD I have found ReasonPrep to be more helpful with that personally! Reason prep has a YouTube channel with a bunch of videos (some free some paid).
The Barron’s Book is good for math because the problems are supposedly even harder than on the actual SAT, so you’ll be extra prepared! As the test is getting closer I’m a little more worried about the writing section. What are people doing to practice for that?
Solving sections and understanding the grammar rule I have trouble with.
Hi guys!
I got the critical reader and I’m working on it. It’s great! (specially if you suffer from passages like I do)
I’ll probably be ready by December though, but I will be trying out November too. I’m using a new 1000 words list as well. (on quizlet)
I’m now scoring stable 10’s on the essay so I’m not sure how to score 12 now. I think it takes some luck? As for the MCQ, I always get those 4 mistakes that I cannot really understand the grammar rule behind - the mistakes are a bit random and they’re mostly related to how sentences are connected. (so not exactly grammar)
For math, I can solve most problems I encounter, but I make mistakes an idiot wouldn’t make. Hopefully I’ll eliminate these as I practice.
How is your progress going?
I’ve barely started studying. I guess I should probably do that.
@dsi411 it’s really tough with school around. I stay up during the night for a few more hours to try to make some progress - but I only have time for one of the three subjects to work on a day.
Third time taking this lovely test. First was in 2012, then in 2014 and finally now. It’s going to be my last time too, if the fates allow hahah. Also planning to do the subject tests in December, physics and math II.
My studying just consists of doing practice tests, just so I don’t lose my pacing. My biggest obstacle is making careless mistakes, so I’m ironing that out. I’ve just cracked 700 on all 3 areas, but I can’t seem to go any higher for the life of me. I seriously don’t know how people manage to get in the 750’s, because it seems that I’ve hit a cap.
16 days left! D^^:
The October test was my 3rd time and I’m so dissapointed
1st time Dec 2014 --Math-640 , Reading-550, Writing-600
2nd time June 2015 --Math-610, Reading-540, Writing- 610
3rd time October 2015–Math- 620 , Reading-520, Writing- 670
At this point I don’t really know what to do. I’ve done all the tests in the blue book. Some more than 2 times. Funny thing is I’m scoring in the high 1900s and low 2000s on my practice tests which I take with 3minutes less time yet collegeboard always finds a way to F|_|CK up my scores. All I really need is just a score above 2000 and I’ll be OK. I’m registering late for the Nov. test which is definitely my last SAT.
If anyone can advice me on how to improve my reading and math score, I would be very grateful. My real problem with math is time and careless errors. For reading only collegeboard knows! I never scored below a 620 on reading when I was preparing for the October test yet I managed to get a ridiculous 520!
Just got my October scores back, 1920. Really hoping for a 2000+ this time! I actually got pretty lucky with the 1900+, I seriously was expecting an 1800 MAX, since all of my practice tests have been under 1800. I got a 10 on my essay, but I thought I would have gotten an 11 or 12, since I thought my examples were pretty good, but I think my vocab and grammar might have been weak. I hope November will be good for me! Btw, I’m a Junior so November and January will be my last times. If I don’t reach my goal (2200+) I guess I’ll be taking the new SAT too, which stinks because I haven’t even tried studying for it.
Hey @DonMilton , I can give you some tips, but I feel as though you may have seen them already. Regardless,
I know it’s known, but it’s really essential to fixate in your mind that EVERY question is worth the same amount of points. “No duhh…” I’m saying this because this is more than enough of a reason to put the majority of your focus on the easy and medium questions. Those are your targets. Sometimes people underestimate the first questions, and breeze through them. Sure, maybe they got most right, but there’s always that window that you misread one little word, or circled the answer that said “6>7” instead of “6<7” . That’s happened to me plenty of times.
You’re not aiming for 2400, are you? Let’s put this mathematically. Let’s say you skipped all the hard questions in the three math sections. That’s…
3 in the 20 question set.
4 in the 18 question set.
2 in the 16 question set.
Let’s assume that you activated ultimate attention mode on all the others, and got them right. That’s a raw score of 45. That can range anywhere from 650-680 depending on the curve, higher than any score you’ve gotten. Now, I’m not telling you to skip the hard ones, I’m just setting some perspective. If you’re able to do the hard ones, or at least cancel out two alternatives, do them!
tl;dr - Allocate your focus mainly on the easy and medium questions, make it a priority to get all them right, read through them slowly, twice if need be. Don’t dread if you can’t answer the hard ones. If you can eliminate one or two alternatives, guess. If not, leave it blank.
