NROTC On Campus versus Off Campus

What are the differences between NROTC On Campus and NROTC Off Campus?

Are you referring to NROTC life living on campus in a dorm versus living off campus in an apt./house?

Or, are you referring to attending a college that houses a NROTC program on campus versus a college that has a cross town affiliation with a nearby sch. that houses the NROTC program?

I’m referring to attending a college that houses a NROTC program on campus versus a college that has a cross town affiliation with a nearby school that houses the NROTC program.

My son will be attending college at a cross-town affiliate to his NROTC unit at a large public university about 5 miles away. He’ll need to do some creative scheduling in order to be at the unit two mornings per week for PT and Military Science classes at the public u. One big disadvantage for s is that his college will not count his Military Science classes toward his degree, so he’ll be overloaded every semester in order to graduate on time.

S1 is a NROTC senior (commissioning next week…yah). He is at a big state u. where the NROTC program is located. As S1732 said, it will take very creative scheduling to be able to make the trips between two campuses work out.

Besides the PT and MS classes his unit has a “Lab” in the first couple of years that was mandatory but no credit. Also, his unit has mandatory 8 hours/week study hall for all first sem. freshman and anyone whose gpa is below 3.0 thereafter. That may be unique to his campus though.

S’s university gives credit for NROTC classes but it doesn’t fulfull any requirements for his major so he’s really just graduating with a ton of extra hours. He pretty much took 17-19 hours (once took 20) every semester until his last (only 13) to get through in four years.
A lot of NROTC engineering majors take an extra semester to get through.
S had a lot of AP credit hours going in which helped him a lot.

My advice wuld be to contact the NROTC program you are interested in attending and get a rundown of their usual schedule/requirements to see how it will mesh with your other school’s demands.
