Hello guys, I want to know your thoughts on on-campus vs off-campus housing.
What are some pros and cons of each option taking into consideration a budget of up to $600.00 and no preference about how many people are in the dorm/apartment, for example, are on-campus dorms more strict than off-campus dorms? If so, does that mean that one should expect a relatively quiet environment. Are there dorm inspections for on-campus dorms? What are your experiences with off-campus administrators? Thank you in advance, any little information you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
I think on-campus dorms are both more strict (drinking) AND louder. I wouldn’t expect a quiet study environment in a freshman dorm, necessarily. But there are plenty of libraries and other study spaces on campus! The reason for dorming (in your first year at the school, primarily) would be the ease of meeting people, and the convenience of being on campus.
My son lived in the Tolbert area last year and is returning this year - there are a bunch of guys coming back to their exact floor. Many of them are in CS or engineering so they have a lot in common.
We live very close by so he could live at home and easily go back and forth. I pushed strongly for him to live on campus and am glad he did. That first year is when you really meet people. He spent quite a bit of time here at the house (more than he should have imho) but he still met a bunch of guys. I am not sure he would have done that off campus.
On our parent page it sounds like there are students who have done fine living off campus. For some people, having their own room/bathroom is extremely important. I think it depends heavily on the student.
If it were me I’d try on campus first. But it can be a bit of a crap shoot in a double (or late register triple). Some people do experience rough roommate situations. My son had a very nice roommate, and most of the guys on his floor were nice too.
He said it can get loud. His RA was good about enforcing/reminding people of quiet hours especially during exams, etc. But be aware that it can get loud in off-campus housing too, especially in undergrad-heavy areas.
It’s a tough decision - good luck!
I am going to be living on campus but i wish i would have looked more into Windsor, and if youre a girl, ivy house. Its all personal preference though.
You never get a chance to repeat the experience of freshman year on campus. I don’t think you’ll regret it for the experiences you’ll have. (I guess I’m directing that more at you, Herosaurus)
