I applied for the China summer program and I’m so excited! Has anyone recieved notification of interviews yet or any notification?

I don’t think anyone has received word of interviews, judging from this, Cultures-Shocked, and the NSLI-Y Facebook page.

Ok, thanks for your help. Good luck to everyone!

No problem, goodluck to you as well!

does anyone have an update about getting contacted for an interview? I’m kind of unsettled by this! I was a semifinalist last year, and I had a telephone interview. I got rejected eventually. but I applied again this year and I PASSIONATELY desire to be part of this program :)

It still seems as if no one has been contacted about being a semi-finalist. Did they give reasons for rejecting you? What kind of questions did they ask? Also where are you applying to?

dfactorial–how soon did they contact you last year? i don’t know anyone who’s been contacted yet.

I thought for sure I’d hear something this week!

yeah, i’m starting to get slightly worried. we only have less than a month to find out!

Someone heard something on Cultures-Shocked.org it was sent to him by a AFS Volunteer so I think we will be getting them at different times based on the speed of if they can find a volunteer for us and getting the volunteer our information.

The application deadline last year was early February. I hadn’t been contacted about an interview until the end of February, when NSLI sent out a mass e-mail saying “if you aren’t contacted to set up an interview within a week, please e-mail us.” a week later I e-mailed them, and got an interview set up.

it was my first interview for anything ever and I was kind of awkward and tongue-tied. I think I came across as immature, which is death for this program. The only question I remember, probably because I had so much difficulty answering it, was along the lines of “You’re studying in Cairo. One day, in a history class, you hear your teacher make a grievous misstatement about an event in American history, like that the Civil War happened in the 1920s. How do you respond?”

They didn’t give any reasons for rejection. but I’ll paste here some paragraphs from the rejection, if your sadism compels you to want to see it:

"Dear NSLI for Youth applicant,
We are writing to thank you for completing and submitting an application for the 2009 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI for Youth) programs. The NSLI for Youth team sincerely appreciates the amount of time and effort you took to complete your application as well as the emotional investment you made during the application process. Unfortunately, we have to inform you that you were not selected by the NSLI for Youth selection committee as an alternate or a finalist.

This years National pool of over 1300 applicants was highly competitive, and the task of selecting participants from among so many excellent applicants was extremely difficult. We encourage you, therefore, to not take the committees decision as a reflection of your language learning ability or ability to participate in future language or youth exchange programs. In fact, we would like to urge you to pursue your vision of learning a language and participating in international exchange programs.

…

If you are not entering a college or university in 2009, you may be eligible for the NSLI for Youth 2010-11 programs (summer, fall and spring semester, and academic year). NSLI for Youth expects to have even more scholarships available next year and we hope that you will come back to visit our website ([NSLI for Youth](http://www.nsliforyouth.org)) to apply. We have not yet finalized our program schedule, but we expect that our application will be available in September and the deadline will be in late November. We wish
you the best in your endeavors and hope that you continue your interest in foreign language and international exchange.
Sincerely,
The NSLI for Youth team, American Councils

I’m sorry if it seemed like I wanted you to re-live the rejection I was just attempting to get a feel of the other side of things, because all the accounts I’ve read no one has been rejected. I hope this time is different for you, and I bet it will because you have experienced it and know a little bit more of how things work. I’m hopin’ you get it :)

Has anyone heard anything? I’ve read that students in New Jersey and Indiana have heard…

I’m in Maryland and haven’t heard anything.

The nsliforyouth.org website has been updated:

Update on the Selection Process for Current NSLI-Y Applicants

NSLI-Y is currently in the process of selecting semi-finalists, who will all be interviewed for further consideration of a scholarship. AFS volunteers will contact semi-finalists starting in late January and throughout February. Please be patient and wait for this contact, which may be via phone or e-mail. Application materials and interview reports of all semi-finalists will then be reviewed by a selection panel at American Councils headquarters in Washington, DC. Final decisions will be sent in early April.

NSLI-Y consortium staff is not currently able to respond to any inquiries regarding the selection of semi-finalists. However, if you have not received a rejection letter by February 2, 2010 and have not been contacted about an interview, you may contact AFS at 1-800-876-2376, ext. 1165.

NOTE: All semi-finalists are required to submit a completed Medical Evaluation form, which will soon be available on this website. The form must be postmarked by March 12, 2010 in order for your application to still be considered.
