NSLI-Y Program.

I am sorry for those did not get in, but sometimes things happen for a reason.
For those who plan to reapply next year, I suggest you be confident in your interview and ask a good teacher for a recommendation. This was my first time applying and I made it. I worked my butt off on my essays and because my parents can’t speak english my sister wrote my parent essay for me. When I had my interview I was confident and enthuistic because I practiced days before and looked online to see what kind of questions they would ask you if you are applying to study abroad and that helped (plus im used to getting interviews because of jobs and maybe this is teh first times that half of you havge had an interview). Because I was confident my interviewer said that she will definetly recommend me because my interviewer was much better. (I suggest you think about your answers first because some of the queststions were indeed hard i.e What would you do if you came home and found your host mother angry with you?)
I hope that those who didn’t get in will try to reapply next year because it will show how dedicated and commited you are!

Sasoue, I am a senior and I amit that waiting for a answer was indeed hard because I have so many plans this summer and I always kept in my mind what if I don’t get to study abroad what will i do this summer? I had a back up plan that if I didn’t get into the program I would keep working at my job and if I did get into the NSLI-Y program, I would be superrr excited and enjoy my time abroad. And for college applications and all, you should def apply in Sept - Jan because so then you won’t stress out. I applied to my colleges when I was able to and I don’t have to worry about anything because I already found and decided what college to go to. I had my fasa done and all and my college orientation day is already schedule and I did my placement testing already. So the only thing you need to do to lessen your stress is do your college stuff ahead of time and have a back up plan. ;D

This thread is dead haha…
I had my conference call with AFS… really didn’t learn anything

How long do you guys think the visa process will take

Depends on the country…I know that Russia’s takes a bit of time, while you can get a Turkish visa upon arrival.

My daughter got in for the Egypt year long. If there were only 250 accepted (including alternates, which I think is what was mentioned on the call), then how many are going to each of the host countries for the given programs (Summer Semester, Fall semester, Spring Semester and year)?

Are there any other year long Egypt students on this list still reading this thread?

Hi,
Has anyone heard from NSLI-Y regarding their Alternate status for Summer 2010? Is anyone off the alternate list to travel to his/her foreign country? We’re still on limbo with rest of our summer plans until they let us know…

@Bendygirl yeah but that is just those sponsored by AFS.

Has anyone gotten a schedual for everything pre departure

I think it will depend on the speed of the sponsoring organizaiton

i wasn’t informed about a conference call… do they go by alphabetical order?

Check your junk mail.
If not they probably missed you. They missed me too and many others forgot about their conference call. Just email your program and let them know that either they forgot you or you havent recieved an email informing you on your conference call. They make sure to email a summary of what was said on the conference call to those who missed it and the ones who were on the conference call

I went on the conference call but they said we would be having a country specific call actually they said we would have a few of them. Just curious cause I don’t want to miss anything

Okay so the site says the apps for 2010-2011 are no longer being accepted. Is summer 2011 included in that or in the next batch of apps? Tajikistan sounds cool :P

No, the current application cycle that began last fall and ended at the end of April was for summer 2010, fall 2010, spring 2011 and full year 2010-11 programs. The next application cycle will probably begin sometime in the fall.

Just did the survey for AFS. Anyone else do it too?

I did! I hope that means they are closer to giving us more information

I was just notified about my regional orginizational day where we will get to meet other people going with afs and learn more about the trip.

When is yours? Mine is in early June.

Same mine is in Austin. You?

Mines in DC
