russian year with afs. i was expecting summer, but not sure what to do now…defer to a private, or reapply to UCs? im scared…

Year program with AFS China… The problem is that in addition to applying to NSLI I also applied to AFS directly, so that if I didn’t get the NSLI scholarship I could still go. Through the AFS process, AFS has already rejected me. Now I don’t know whether or not I can still get the NSLI scholarship, if the program they want to put me through has already rejected me.
Anyone in a similar bind? I don’t really know what to do…

If NSLIY accepted you, don’t worry about your AFS rejection. AFS would not have final say. They are just contracted by NSLIY to provide services. Congratulations!

Why not do both? You can even apply to different schools if you have the desire and energy. You will be a different candidate when you can say that you are currently studying Russian during a year abroad. If you end up not wanting to attend the school you deferred, you would just let them know and they’d give your spot to someone on their waitlist.

does anyone know when they will be sending us additional info about our scholarship and stuff about the visa?

Thank you! But I really don’t understand how that will work. AFS China rejected me because they couldn’t find a host family that could house me, how is that going to change simply because I got a scholarship? Will they reassess me paperwork do you think?

Does anyone know when the academic year program in China for 2010-2011 comes home (the one that should be finishing up in the next couple of months)? A friend of mine is on it and myself and a few other people are trying to plan a surprise welcome home party, but we don’t know when the person on the trip is actually coming home. Thanks!

Thanks Apollo6! I didn’t even know that was ethically possible, but I’ll take your advice!

@Chocolateparfait, NSLIY has their own set of host families so they would not have selected you if they had not had a family for you. You’re good.

@topramennbaklava, I wouldn’t feel guilty if you end up not attending the school from which you deferred. After all, think how happy you would make someone who is on the waitlist. Do what is best for you. I don’t think it is unethical.

Congratulations to everyone accepted and for those not selected - CIEE offers a 2 week scholarship to study abroad in South Korea.

Don’t let one rejection end your dreams of studying abroad

For those who didn’t get in to NSLI-Y this year, there is a Shanghai program still open to accepting students for a 3-week and a 6-week summer stay at the University. It is not terribly expensive (as study abroad programs go) and we are excited to be sending our son on the 3-week trip! The application process is very easy, especially once you have been through the NSLI-Y process.

Does anyone know when we will find out more info about our program that we are going into?

Hi. I don’t know if anyone is still on this thread. But I’m currently completing my application for NSLI-y and I’m quite excited!

Hey I read this thread a long time ago and came back just today to see if anyone was gonna continue it this year. I also applied and I’m so excited and nervous!

I’m applying for Korea Year, Summer, and China Year.
Does anyone know the acceptance rates?

See the Culture Shocked NSLIY forum for the most up to date information [Welcome to Cultures Shocked!](http://www.cultures-shocked.org)

Thanks for the info!

It’s really nice to see this thread still going; thanks for all the helpful insight that you have given us! (:

I was notified earlier this week that I am a semi-finalist! So I am super super duper duper excited, although I am quite nervous for the interview.

Does anyone have any last minute suggestions about what to do/what not to do during the interview? I’ve read through most of the posts, but I was hoping if anyone could offer any more advice! I’m so nervous yet excited!

Good luck to all!

Yay, just received a follow up email!

“Congratulations on making it to the final interview round for the National Security Language Institute (NSLI) program. Whether or not you win an NSLI scholarship, you should understand that making it to the NSLI final round is an achievement in itself. This is a hugely competitive process, and you should feel proud of your accomplishment thus far.”

And then it talked about the tentative date of the interview and such. Good luck to everyone! :)

I applied for China, Russia, and the Arabic countries for the summer program. I’m a semifinalist and will be having my interview on January 21st. Super excited! This thread has been really helpful in answering some of my questions, I’m glad to see it’s still going.
