I was notified at 3:30 pm EST. I am a finalist for Jeonju, South Korea.
I just got my notification as an alternate at 3:18 pm EST.
I received my Jeonju finalist notification at 12:30 PST.
DD was not accepted to Arabic summer. Good luck to the others accepted. Sounds like a wonderful adventure!
congratulations to everyone who got this far! Y’all are champs!
If any AY people are on here still, Hindi AY was just released.
Has anyone been rejected yet? I thought they were supposed to come out a week ago
As someone who was an alternate but ended up being able to go, don’t give up just because you are an alternate! In a group of 11 of us, two were alternates before we were eventually got accepted - I got accepted about 2 weeks after I got the alternate notification and the other alternate got her acceptance about a month after her alternate notification.
i was referring to those who are rejected, not of alternate status. Just want to get it over with.
@marylynnrose were you for the Korean summer program? I’ve only found 5 alternates in total this year. Do you think they keep around the same number of alternates each year or no? One of us already got bumped up to songdo and the rest of us are just waiting.
@WeightInGold no, I was with the Tajiki Persian program. I think there is a ratio they keep - as there were only 11 of us who studied Tajiki, there were probably only 5 or so alternates (perhaps there were the same number of alternates as accepted in case everybody declined?) There is still a possibility a few of you might be bumped up but I don’t think there is any way to figure it out except by waiting. The other alternate was accepted after we began learning our pre-departure lessons so she joined the group roughly 6 weeks before we left.
I’m sorry if this has asked before, but what are the dates for the summer programs in Morocco, Jordan and Tajikistan? When do you departure the US and the arrive back?
For NSLI-Y alumni with experience in China, did any of you have to do your laundry by hand? Any of you have a squatty potty in the host family home?
All host families are required to have a western toilet, and all (if memory serves) also have a washing machine. Clothes hang-dry, and girls do have to wash their underwear by hand, but other than that it can all go into the washing machine.
Because there’s so many different organizations for Morocco, it depends. I know the iEARN Morocco group has their first day of pre-departure orientation today, but there are other groups who haven’t left yet. I’m not sure about Jordan or Tajikistan, but I believe they haven’t left yet
Hello,
I am an unsuccessful applicant from the 2019 summer cycle that only made it to semi-finalist status. I want to be able to get in this year as it is my last chance. I was wondering if there is a place in which I can ask an Alumni to review perhaps even edit my essays since they have a better understanding of what the adcom is looking for given they have been through the program now. Please reply to this comment if you would be willing to spare some time helping me out! Thanks!
I am sure you can find a network of alumni willing to edit and read anyone’s essays on the “Ask NSLI-Y alumni” Facebook page. You can find me there!
@aureliav1 Hey! Congrats on being selected! I was actually applying to the same program and would love if you could provide some feedback on my essays! Lmk
