Kathieex: Did you get a grant for spring as well or just for fall while abroad?

Uhm. I think you did get accepted. But the caveat is you have to go abroad for the fall first. I suppose it isn’t that big a dea. NYU has LSP which sends you for TWO years!

FAFSA doesn’t count because you aren’t ACTUALLY a student at northeastern yet. I know someone who worked as sort of an RA/group leader for it last year and she said that your acceptance can be revoked at any time (but only for like severe rule breaking or failing every single course).

SO I spoke with an admissions officer at NU - basically its all or nothing - you are accepted at NU for the IN program and guaranteed for SPring semester less risky than the waitlist. Waitlist for certain majors doesn’t move (International Business school, Business, etc).

NU had for 2011 43200 applicatants and accepted 2800 for the fall plus 350 into the in program. There is about a $10k delta in the total cost - over seas costs in some instances include room but no food (Austrailia for instance).

I agree this feels really strange - kind of adding more chairs to the deck but putting them on the starboard side until spring.

^^Bev, your numbers are off, and of course, acceptances go out to A LOT more than 2,800 kids. That would be only accepting like 1 out of every 17 or 18 (There are about 15,000 undergrads at NE) That may be the number who enroll - 2800. Quick google search shows acceptance rate closer to 35 - 40%, with only 25% yield. Those numbers make more sense.
Now, I’m not a mathematician, so these numbers are not exact…
(BTW, I think the NE “In” option rreally stinks for most, not good PR at all for NEU, but just my peronal opinion.)

Officially admissions has released that “less than 35%” have been accepted this year. I believe last year was around 30 or 33, but they’ll come out with a more precise number sometime soon.

During the first part of the post, NU doesnt cost 80k, its more like 56k without aid

Kathiex

like wise my S was offered a 4.7K grant ofr the fall semester in either Greece or Austrailia

Not sure I understand why folks find this not an acceptance to NU because they are studying the first semester abroad…

I was admitted to NU in this year and after a lot of discussion and research, I’ve put down my deposit for the program in London.

I think that, because students and parents are so shocked by this alternative form of acceptance, they do not fully understand the program and often are confused with details. It’s not 80k for the year, for me, it’s about a 7k difference from a regular NU student, and they aren’t studying in Kensington (London). Also, students are not admitted because their grades/test scores are slightly under the standard for fall admit. Admissions takes students that they believe would do well studying abroad first semester. For example, I spent 2+ weeks in Panama last summer on a program with my high school. I’m also first generation. I know that a lot of other students admitted this year have international experience. Another interesting fact is that, this year, NU decided to cut spring admits and make it so that ONLY NU in students could be admitted spring (nobody is going to local community colleges, then moving to Boston in spring). I also talked to my college counselor and he said that this is not uncommon program for a school. Apparently, USC has been doing it for a long time. Also, I know specifically for London, there are students from other universities (Santa Clara, Baylor, etc.) that stay in your house in Kensington through FIE- because FIE is an established organization.

While you may not technically be a NU student, from the packet (which is filled with pictures of students in NU gear ON their trips), it’s safe to say that students consider themselves as such (especially considering that they are 100% guaranteed spring housing, etc.)

I’m so excited for next year and I’m really looking forward to living in London!

I am so surprised, and disappointed, to see on NEU’s website that Halise is correct, and that the NUin program is now mandatory for spring admission. When my student attended NUin, you could also work or go to community college in the fall. NUin was a great option for her, and is a good way to pass the time, while earning credits and meeting other Northeastern students admitted only for spring. The program was low-key, travel is always of value, but the reason she participated was because she wanted to go to school in Boston, Northeastern was her top choice, she had spent time away from home so knew she could cope with it, she could get past the ego-bruise of it, and mostly, we could afford it. Now that the NUin program is mandatory, it is more apparent that it is an option for pay-your-way students, small stipends notwithstanding, which seems kind of unfair.

The spring admit option without NUin was eliminated a couple of years ago. Students were told that they could take courses at a comm. college or another university in the fall but that they were NOT to enrol in a degree propgram at another school for the fall semester. This would deny another student being admitted to that school.

Unfortunately, many students did enrol in degree programs at other schools in the fall and then “dropped out” to attend Northeastern in the spring. Northeastern found the rule not to enrol in a degree program elsewhere impossible to enforce.

Can someone please explain to me in detail about what NU in program actually is? I’m really confused…I know we are going to study abroad for the first semester…but…do we have to? Can’t we just go to NEU at the spring? must we study abroad first? and…are we going to get any credits when we study abroad? are the credits going to be able to transfer back to NEU? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP…

If you were admitted to the NUIn program, you must study abroad in the fall. You cannot choose just to enrol in January. The credits will transfer. Read the NUIn threads here on CC and the website:

Tom, Thanks! I really appreciated for your help! : ) are you also admitted to NU in program?

Tom is already a student (or possibly graduated by now, can’t remember).

My daughter was admitted to NUin for Greece, she’s a nursing major. Totally torn between NU & U Delaware & she’s out of the country now & has limited time to decide as May 1 approaches. Wondering if anyone else is going to the Greece site & what other schools you’re considering.

@NShrock- I am also a nursing major for sure going to Greece, I just made my deposit! I haven’t really met many others that are going for nursing so that is really cool that your daughter is thinking about it. Personally I think it sounds like the most amazing experience and she should definitely consider it!

There is a current thread where the Nuin program has been discussed. Also as part of the Global Experience class, students posted YouTube videos. On YouTube search NUin Greece 2012 or whichever site in which you are interested.
