NU R/TV/F majors?

Has anyone on this board applied for it, or are already in the program?

What's it like (classes/projects/ec activities/environment)?

I'm not in the program (I'm a theatre major), but I lived in the Communications Residential College (CRC) last year...it's a dorm that's heavily populated with RTVF and Journalism students. I know that A LOT of the RTVF residents of CRC had awesome opportunities to work on and even produce their own films. Lots of freshmen got film grants to take on their own projects. It seemed super awesome. I hope that someone on these boards is in the RTVF program at NU so that they can tell you firsthand about all of the wonderful opportunities they have, but my general impression of the program is that students are intensely involved (if they want to be)...and that it's easy to get involved (there are so many different projects always going on).

lovelyspotlight,
what was CRC like for you? i hear a lot about having a tight community, but i'd like to know more than that. Is it a party dorm? what's the general atmostphere? where do you get your meals usually? how are room sizes and convenience? ...etc

CRC definitely does have a pretty tight community atmosphere. My problem was that I never really went to the residential college activities that CRC held, so I never really got super involved with that tight community.

I would say that the dorm, overall, is not a party dorm. There were definitely room parties that happened, but a good many of them were broken up by CAs. The residents would usually just go out and party, so, on most Friday and Saturday nights, the halls weren't too awfully crowded with people; rather, they were pretty quiet.

When I lived in CRC, I usually ate at Hinman, which is right across Sheridan Road from CRC. Once I got a block meal plan, though, I started eating more often at Norris (the university center), which also isn't very far from CRC. That's one thing I loved about CRC - the location is tremendous for people in the School of Communication (oh and for Medill people).

Room size was okay. I happened to end up in a pie double last year. (Pie doubles - there are three of them in the dorm, one on each floor...they're shaped like pie slices and are pretty roomy.) My boyfriend, though, was in a room that is just a LITTLE bigger than the single he has in Foster-Walker Complex (a non-freshman dorm) this year. There are definitely dorms with bigger rooms than CRC offers, but they're not awful. Like I said, I lucked out and got a HUGE room.

That all being said, I am living at Foster-Walker (Plex) this year because it's a better atmosphere for me, personally. Plex is considered a dorm where you don't meet people...if you don't already have friends, you won't make them in Plex. That's what I decided I wanted in terms of a living situation. I experienced a few moments last year when I felt as though my personal life and privacy was invaded by other residents of CRC. It added an extra layer of stress that I didn't need in my life, and it really upset me. I wanted to be able to relax when I got back from a long day of classes/work study/rehearsal. I'm not saying you can't relax in CRC. There's just not a lot of privacy. So it really just depends on the type of person you are.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

non-party dorms sound so nice.. i also heard that NU's policy on alcohol is intense..

rtvf sounds like a great program thus far.. :D

stacym,

i'm a junior RTVF major.
PM me with questions if you want

lovelyspotlight,

My daughter is a junior in hs and is interested in Northwestern for theater. Since you are a theater major I was wondering if you can tell me what qualifications the majority of the admitted class had. Are their GPAs and test scores as important as for other majors? Is there an interview with the department? How likely would it be for a freshman to get roles? Do they have a freshman performance each year as some other theater programs do? How many students are enrolled as freshman theater majors each year?

Thanks
