NU Social+Transfer Questions

Hey 'Cats,

I'm transferring from UIUC to NU and I've got a few questions.

What dorm do transfers live in?

What are aspects of campus that I should know? (i.e. North campus, South campus)

What is Greek life like, how big is it, and how serious do Greeks get? This is in comparison to Greek life at UIUC which is pretty big.

Thanks!

There used to be a transfer house, I don’t think there is anymore because isolating transfers further was a stupid idea.

There are plenty of good threads on this but: campus is a contiguous block (except the football field). “North” campus is the north end, frats, gyms, science buildings. “South” campus is the south end, sororities, theaters, humanities buildings. Mid-campus is where the library and student center live, along with the Psych department (fittingly enough). South campus is also the edge that borders downtown Evanston. The Lakefill is the part of the campus that is pretty that sticks out onto the lake.

Greek life is about 33% for men, closer to 40% for women. It’s a major social presence but by no means does it dominate campus life. As for how serious? It’s still NU, meaning NU students. School comes first for the vast majority, so not as serious as at UIUC.

Okay cool thanks!

So then transfers just live wherever they want (or wherever there’s space)?

I believe so, though I’m not 100% certain on how it works. I think there are some former transfers who float on here/ there should be info somewhere on the website. If not, they’ll get you info soon enough.

alright thanks!

This past year transfers lived in Plex. I’m pretty sure it’ll be the same next year.
I’m also involved in Greek life. Greek life is what you make of it at Northwestern. One of the girls in my pledge class was a transfer student and she loved it, it’s another way to meet people!

Do we have to pay extra if we get stuck in a single?

Yes. Singles are more expensive. Specific dorm/room type prices are on the housing website.

Keep in mind many people see singles as desirable compared to doubles.

Isn’t Plex all singles though? So we pretty much have to pay extra as transfers?
