I really would like to go to Northwestern (it is my first choice) and I am also interested in majoring in broadcast journalism. Thus, the reason I was wondering if I could apply to both WCAS and Medill (I don't think I could major in broadcast journalism at WCAS, but I know that Medill is very competitive and I don't know if I would be able to get in!)?

apply to medill... its not that much harder to get in to as long as you have experience on your school newspaper and other journalism extracurriculars/jobs. The average SAT of medill is actually not any higher than WCAS.

But no, you can't apply to both. Medillions are expectedt to also take a second major in WCAS... but since medill is so much more popular of a school, they dont let anybody from WCAS double major in Journalism.

For example, im planning to double major in mag. journalism and psychology. If i had applied to WCAS for psych, i would not be able to double major in journalism without applying to medill before sophomore year (and applying to transfer into medill is harder than applying as a frosh) - whereas now, im In medill and i can take all the psych classes i want.

Thanks very much glamourbaby19.

What's this divide between north and south campus people keep talking about? What am I missing?

Thanks a lot for the responses!

its pretty simple, TBB, north campus is home to all of the engineering stuff, sports stuff, and frat stuff. South side is home to all of the liberal arts, music, theatre and journalism stuff, and also the library.
North campus is more jock-party oriented because of these factors... south campus tends to be more intellectually-driven and not quite as intense into the partying.

South campus is also home to all the sororities... which, despite the fact that they still all go to north campus for partying, is still good news for the boy-girl ratio where I'm living.

they're really only about a ten minute walk apart... but there is a bit of geographic seperation still.

TheCity, it's not a 10-minute walk. It's more like a 15-minute walk. (You will realize this once you try to walk on both campuses during the bad weather seasons.)

hey, I am really sorry if you have answered this question a million times, but I am running out of time before I leave to visit NU and just wanted to ask some questions before I go.

1 - How competitive is the Pre-Law program? Is it still considered in the top 10 in the nation?

2 - Is NU a good school to go to even if you are undecided about your major?

3- How is the psychology/sociology program at NU?

Thank you so much 'The City' I will deifinitely take your advice. I am really interested in majoring in broadcast journalism and minoring in pscyhology (almost exactly like you)! THANKS!!!

Say if u live on the south do you feel that it is hard to get to know people from the North and become good firends with them becasue of the distance between the north and the south? Also do you find that the south has more women then men?

Do most NU students hold jobs?

Hey guys -- I apologize for the late responses. I just got back from Chicago today.

First question:
*#1 - How competitive is the Pre-Law program? Is it still considered in the top 10 in the nation?

2 - Is NU a good school to go to even if you are undecided about your major?

3- How is the psychology/sociology program at NU?*

I have no idea what is the ranking for the Legal Studies program. I just know that some top professors with expertise in law teach in the program. It's highly competitive and can only apply during the end (spring quarter) of freshman and sophomore year. Many people double-major or minor in Legal Studies.

Northwestern has six schools with different areas of curriculum and focuses. Of course it's a good school to go for the undecided! The general ed requirements and freshman seminars (if you're in CAS) help guide your way through college. You may find something interesting by the end of your freshman year. There are endless opportunities.

The psychology program is decent. The sociology department is ranked very high. It's very good too.

Goyankees, while I do not know the gender ratios, I would say that South Campus is 50/50 men and women while North Campus leans heavily 70/30 men and women. There are female athletes and students who have classes and therefore live on North Campus. You will also hang out a lot at Foster-Walker (mid-campus).

As for jobs, I don't think most NU students have jobs. On-campus jobs have a high preference for work/study students, but the Library and other positions do hire non-work/study students. I would say that no more than 1/3 of the campus has a part-time job.

TheCity, it's not a 10-minute walk. It's more like a 15-minute walk. (You will realize this once you try to walk on both campuses during the bad weather seasons.)

-Hallelujah!

"The main downside to NU is, well, the classes, I guess. I know that sounds stupid, but the things I love most about Northwestern have nothing to do with anything academic. I love the people - the students there are some of the best people I've ever met. Many things about NU will irritate you from time to time (the weather, the nasty food, the unrelenting schedule of tests and papers...), but you get over it and realize the good things about Northwestern. Each person has their own likes and dislikes about the school he/she attends, so it's hard to say what are the best and worst parts."

-Now this is just about the best thing I have read all summer!

it cant be 50/50 and 70/30, the school is 52% female

I think he means South feels about even but it probably has slightly more women due to sororities and theater. North campus definitely does not feel even due to frats and heavy partying.

This may have been answered before, and if so I am sorry. In your opinion, does having a single dorm room make it significantly harder to make friends during your freshman year?

mm. this may be an odd question, but does anyone happen to know if allison still has a mice / bug problem? i really dislike rodents and bugs... haha .. meaning i'd freak out if i saw a mouse running around or spider in the bathroom...

If you have a single, you have to put more effort to get involved with your dormmates.

I don't know any mice/bug problem in the dorms. You're gonna have bugs (i.e. spiders) in your room or in the hallways regardless where you are. Ants is a different story (never had them happened to me).

Ov vey, now I've got a ton of questions.

(tensighs...you could rename/start a new thread called "NU Upperclassmen Taking Questions," XD)

Okay, now that I've got a dorm room...@_@ at Slivka...what the heck do I have to bring? Like, a previous poster said they'd stashed a chair somewhere in the dorms and brought their own chair. Now where in the world do you hide a chair for a whole year? At home?

What kind of stuff do you bring to your classes? Your laptop? Backpack? Kind of backpack? (Do I really need a backpack made for laptops? ...Or should I get one of those tiny "cute" backpacks just for pencils...and stuff...) Notebooks? Paper? Folders? blink Is a T-89 calculator okay? File cabinet?

Uh...and when the housing contract says "number of occupants in room = 1" and then says "roomates assigned as of this date = [blank]" does that mean I'm in a single?

Thanks.

As of now I have no questions about NU except about the food..
how is the food there? I think someone commented that it is bad?

Toboe, you're getting kinda ridiculous with the questions. Bring whatever you will use. If you're curious, go to stores such as Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond for they have back-to-school (college) checklists that are very useful. If you're not gonna use the stuff you like at all, don't bring it. I don't recall what the housing contracts look like, but did they specifically say single/double or number of occupants?

Food at NU will make you live. It's not delicious nor is it horrible. Just don't eat too much -- or you will gain the Freshmen 15.

From my experience at Preview NU, the food is ok, its not great

It's edible though
