haha. grilled cheese, pasta, fries, some dried up salad, canned fruits.. and the safety cereal. typical high school cafeteria food is what it seemed like to me at preview nu. doesn't compare to most of the other colleges i've eaten at, but oh well.

the food for me at northwestern was much better than expected.. and it actually turned out to be a factor why i chose to go there. Compared to UofC (the other school i visited that week) NU food is ambrosia. They have all kinds of stuff that they cook right there for you, and a big variety. You have to eat at the bigger dining halls to get better food/selection... for example Sargent and Allison food is much better than , say, Willard... in general.

Keep in mind that students gripe about the food at EVERY college, and they usually dont have much to compare the food against, so its often overstated. Most likely people just miss home, and food reminds them of that,

Do you know anything about this dorm?

"the food for me at northwestern was much better than expected.. and it actually turned out to be a factor why i chose to go there."

-Wow, I've never heard anything like this, lol.

I tried posting this separately but got no responses. So...Tensighs or one of you others..could you please tell me what you think the best meal plan is? They have automatically put in a 13 meal/week plan. Do you think you need more? Should I buy "Munch Money?" Can you eat in any facillity on campus with either?

What do you all do?

Thanks for any help.

Does anyone remember their financial aid forms that u get when u were a freshman? remember the ones that show how much u get in loans/workstudy/ and the scholarships you got and how much ur parents have to contribute per year
Did anyone follow it? i mean did yall need more money less money than wat was estimated?

i got a way bigger grant than expected. i was expecting around 15k in grants, and another 10 or so in work study/loans... i got 20k in grants.

i only received 2000 workstudy and 2 something something stafford loan. rejected both and paying for it in full. i didn't take th stafford loan because i'd have to pay the 2 something something later on anyways in addition to an initial loan fee.. and the work study wasn't worth the time, because i'll probably be interning, doing extracurrics, and volunteering..

i was pretty much unhappy with my finaid, but oh well.

primab,

I lived in the dorm 8 years ago and I am not sure if the 13 meals/week plan is the same one I got. Anyway, I think it depends if you want to have full breakfast (eggs, sasuage, bacon...with oatmeal) everyday. A lot of students, including myself, bought milk/cereal (would need a little fridge to store the milk of course) for breakfast and therefore 13 meals/week were more than enough for us. I always "wasted" some meals because I ate out during the weekends. If all you need for breakfast are just cereal, OJ, and milk (assume you have a small fridge), then don't waste money on buying more meals.

Thanks for the info. Sam Lee. That makes sense.....

Meh, I'm getting paranoid. It's HS freshman willies all over again.

...I still don't understand how you can stash a chair someplace in the dorm for a year.

Um...do you guys recommend a joint checking account at US Bank or just an individual? Considering that QuikPay, my parents can pay online, but...they're harping about needing the option adding in money to my account.

I got a student checking account at US Bank, and my parents can still deposit money to my account as long as they have my account number.

This has probably been asked in this thread already but are freshman allowed to bring cars? If so, is it very difficult to find parking? What are the costs?

there are no rules against it. Costs will vary based on which lot you want to park in. The football stadium has a huge lot, and monthly parking is available i think... but its far away from campus, but cheapest. im not sure what the costs of on campus parking are... and im sure freshman get last dibs on reserving a permit, so i dont know if there will be any available.

You dont really need a car in evanston. The el takes you anywhere you want to go, fast, and cheap. NU runs a shuttle to the chicago campus, which is right in the loop (the center of the chicago universe). If you just need a car because you live somewhat nearby and need something to get to school and home in, look into the football lot, otherwise, its not worth it in my opinion. You'd probably just end up having to drive drunk friends around everywhere.

We're hoping to do without a US Band account. My daughter got a MasterCard debit card through our local credit union. It should be good just about anywhere and I can make a deposit when I do my own banking.

i thought you're not allowed to apply for a parking permit until your junior year, and even then, it has to be for a legin reason (ie. off campus internship during the day) ... that's what i remember reading and being told...

mary1019: i got a debit card through my local credit union, too and it has a visa logo. my dad can deposit money in it at anytime. the only problem is, how can i deposit my own money (i.e., checks from work and so forth) into my account if the credit union is not in Illinois, let alone Evanston? (it's a regional bank) i also have a savings account with Bank of America, but the closest ATM is off-campus, and it'd be a lot more convenient to just stay on campus. i'm looking into US bank only because it's on campus and i can deposit my own money in there.

how is your daughter going to work that out?

Why not use the debit card and the US bank account?

frizzbug: well, from what i understand, there will be no connex credit union in Evanston and so eventually, the only money i'll have left in that account will be the money my dad puts in himself. it would make more sense i guess to get a US account and he can put money in that and i'll have that as well as the money i earn all in one account.

i don't want to have too many cards and have some cards that barely have anything on it. honestly, i'm still trying to figure out this whole money thing out. i'm so used to my parents taking care of all my money accounts that this is all a new and painstaking experience.

tenisghs, I am facing an issue with my plane ticket and professors.

I'll be flying home for the winter break and, for my return flight, I can get a much cheaper ticket for Jan 3 than for Jan 2. Is it at all possible to discuss missing my classes on Jan 3 with professors or I just havetobethere_ to start the winter quarter on the first day?
