I'd be surprised if they make exceptions with so many people in the same situation, although it would be nice. I think it's cheaper to fly Dec. 30 or 31 than it is those first few days in January. Does anybody know when the dorms open?

if you fly in early, stay at a friend's house.

Food: A lot of people like the "Block B" meal plan. It gives you more flexibility if you want to eat at Norris or buy food items in on-campus convenience stores. I don't eat 13 meals a week on-campus, never mind 13 meals a week in dining halls. Just wait until you get there to change your meal plan. See what your schedule is and where you might want to eat, then change the plan.

Chair: I put my chair in the TV lounge. If you look closely, there are random closets all around the dorms in which you could put your chair as well. Other people I know just kept their chair in their room closet, but it took up too much room for my liking. Also, other people who live in your dorm may want an extra chair in their room for some reason (playing video games, using at a "kitchen" table, etc.), and so you could loan them yours for the entire year.

Flights: Flying to school sucks. It's expensive and a hassle. We know this. However, I wouldn't miss the first day of classes at the beginning of a new quarter. When you register for classes, many of them say that it is a requirement to attend the first class. From my experience, professors aren't very sympathetic when it comes to flying to and from school. Bite the bullet and pay extra to get there on time. I try and book the flights that I'm not quite sure about the schedule (like coming home for winter break) on airline mileage. You can change your flight with no penalty cost if it is booked on miles.

glamourbaby19: Where are you living this year?

is 1 wildcat point equivalent to 1 dollar?

kk - I'm living in Willard again this year. And yourself?
swtvtgyrl - yep, 1 Wildcat point (part of the meal plans) is equivalent to one dollar.

Jeez, I go on vacation and lovely Northwestern students answer questions to prospective students. woo-hoo!

Ladies and gents, I'm back from vacation. So if you still have any questions that have not been answered, just answer away!

Primab, Block B is the best plan. That is what I used. Whenever I run out of points or meals, I just get Munch Money.

Plmok, freshmen and sophomore are not allowed cars on campus, but many bring cars anyways. If you don't live in Illinois, don't bring one. It's a very costly addition (the fines are hefty if you park in the wrong spot without ID) you don't need. Wait til you're a junior and senior to bring a car on-campus, especailly if you will be living in an apartment.

Lorddragon, it is imperative that you be there for the first day of class during winter quarter. This is when professors do attendance counts and when students who are enrolled in the class are not present, they start to take students off the wait-list on CAESAR. If you have to miss that day, EMAIL THE PROFESSOR so that they know you will not be there on that day. But MAKE SURE you make it to the next class day. (If you have to miss Monday, make SURE you are there on Wednesday). That is all I can say. I usually fly Northwest Airlines, so I never have problems with airfares since my trip is only 48-minutes in the air.

Also, it's usually cheaper to fly AFTER the holidays (not before the holidays). It's also cheaper to fly on New Year's Day, not New Year's Eve.

I'll be in Foster-Walker; I just can't let go of a single room.

hm. that doesn't really make much sense.

the block b meal plan gives you 200 meals and 915 wildcat points. looking at the cash value of the meals, i'd average that each meal is about $7.

$7 x 200 meals = $1400. Add the 915 wildcat points = $2315. Yet the cost of the block b plan is $3822. That kinda sucks. Wouldn't you rather just not have a meal plan and pay for when and what you choose to eat with your own money? Oh well, everyone living on campus is forced to have a meal plan.

Swtv, you may prefer Blocks C and D. They give less meals and points, which I do not like.

i don't really like any of them. =) i'll see when i get there. thanks though.

Sigh, WashU has beaten us in the latest U.S. News rankings.

Tis a horrible day to attend Northwestern.

I know I'll be transferring.

Do most students at NU participate in extracurricular activities? Also how many hours do students usually study in a typical week?

If you're taking four classes, one class = 3 hours/wk = 6 hours of homework. So in essence most students study around 24 hours of homework time.

Yes, most students participate in extracurricular activities and some do work/study jobs.

How difficult is it to switch into one of the preprofessional schools 1 year in? How is the education if you get a general major (like political science) instead of a specific preprofessional one?
