Hi everybody. My son got admitted to NU, UCLA, CMU, NYU and LSE. He will major in Econs and Maths or at least minor in maths. We think it is between NU and LSE. Would really appreciate your views, esp from Econs students and graduates. We don't really care about weather or cost. What we are looking for is a really good education. Any views please...

Both excellent schools, obviously.

I think it comes down to does your sone want to study abroad or study in the US. My uninformed opinion is that if you want to live and work in the US, you’re probably better off going to a school in the US. Certainly it’s easier to arrange summer jobs, permanent interviews, etc.

If I were to make the choice, I’ll base it on whether I like a liberal arts education (having the chance to double major or take up a minor not related to Econ) or just fully focus on Econ. NU has a very flexible curriculum that you can learn some art subjects other than econ; LSE doesn’t offer this opportunity, however its Econ course encompasses a lot of mathematical materials already so there might not be the need to minor in math. Also, I believe that internship and research opportunities are greater at NU especially for first year students, whereas one can only be more involved in those in the 3rd year in LSE (I’m not entirely sure of this, so if someone knows better, feel free to correct me).

From a student’s perspective, I’d advice your son to also base his decision on the module choices. Both universities are also different in terms of surrounding. NU is in a suburb area while LSE is in busy London. As for social life, NU is a Big Ten school and offers frats and sororities, LSE doesn’t. Hope that helps! :)

I’m not sure either will give you a better or worse education with regard to Econ, and I think NU probably has an edge in the majority of other subjects. But at this level the more important factor is where he’ll be happier and thrive.

If your son is 100% sure he wants to do Econ, then definitely go to LSE as it is more world renowned in the subject. If he wants to have the freedom to pursue other subjects, or is not 100% positive on econ, I’d say Northwestern. Either way, however, he will be getting a great education at either school, so it really does come down to what his goals are and how focused/set he is on those.

Though NU economics is very well known, I believe LSE does have an edge. However I also believe that it would be a better choice if your son wants to continue with his economics studying after his undergraduate degree…

My husband also suggested applying to LSE when my son was doing college apps however we both agreed afterwards that it would be better to experience full liberal arts education than focusing on just economics at such early age.

LSE will offer up a similar reputation in business/econ in the US, marginally better reputation internationally.

But there is no comparison between the experiences outside of his major. He’d have dramatically better opportunities to explore other academic interests at Northwestern. LSE is London, a great city. But his life there will integrate into the city, no campus to speak of. Students scattered throughout London. If he’s looking for a campus-centered, broad ranged college experience LSE is just not the place. A great niche experience in business/econ, yes, but at a cost.

Thanks for all your views. I should also add that we are from Singapore and he is likely to work in the financial industry as there are still alot of opportunities, like private equity, algo trading and investment banking in Asia. Reputation and name recognition is important, and I also recognised that college experience in a good school like NU will be invaluable life experience. We will travel across half the globe and and visit NU in mid April to participate in Wildcat days before coming to a decision.

There is a very active and (comparatively) large singaporean student group at NU (NUSAF- NU Singaporeans and Friends): [NUSAF - Northwestern Singaporeans and Friends](http://groups.northwestern.edu/nusaf/wordpress/)
