Hey guys, I applied to Berkeley under ChemE, but I would really like to go into the nuclear/chemical or materials/chemical program once I’m a sophomore.
What are some examples of jobs that nuclear engineers find? Do the joint majors hang out together, or with the ChemE department still? And just how many joint ChemE majors are there at Berkeley? Thaaanks
I and probably most of Chinese or Asian descendants find your screen name to be very offensive and disrespectful. This is true whether you are Asian or not and much more true if you are non-Asian/Chinese.
You can work in a nuclear power plant for a utility. Some around the country are being phased out or closing down. A friend of mine graduated from UC Berkeley over 20 years ago with a bachelors in nuclear engineering and a masters in physics. He worked as a nuclear engineer for a large utility and is unemployed due to the changes in the nuclear industry.
Don’t worry @theChinaman, I blame it on the oversensitive, entitlement plagued upbringing of most of the younger and upcoming generations… People read too much into things that really have absolutely no effect on their personal life whatsoever instead of focusing on things that are actually important. Like responding to the original question and helping someone out. I don’t see how your screen name should be offensive to anyone since it is a title you chose to identify yourself and was not directed at anyone else. 8-|
@Brit.Bermoy, Yeah that’s another reservation I’ve had about applying to Berkeley…As a conservative I’ve heard about the recent bridge blocking protests and various BLM shenanigans and I hope that I won’t have to put up with any of that in college, but I know that there’s going to be heavy liberal representation at every place of higher education.
It’s just that at Berkeley, they’re infamous for these kind of antics, so I’m going to keep an eye out for that when I visit (if I get in) to make sure I won’t be miserable there.
I really do admire the chemE program there though. I visited the department over the weekend and it’s insane. Especially since I’m Chinese, I really fell in love with the place because there’s huge asian represenation and that’s something I didn’t see at any of the other schools.
You have to understand that some of us Asians grew up here in the US being spat on, being called derogatory names (gxxk, jxp, your screen name, ching chong +your screen name, etc.) being discriminated (subtly or intentionally), being stereotyped, made fun of because we don’t fit in, etc. I know it still happens because I hear of it in the news (like the “N” word used on our Afro American brothers or other hate messages on Asians etc.), but fortunately, progress has been made and there are less of it than a few decades ago. I know this forum is about advising and couseling, but people in this forum have to be respectful and sensitive to others too. You appear nonchalant and insensitive about this, while many Asians are offended by your screen name. If you end up attending UCB or any major universities (especially in the West Coast) that have significant number of Asians (20%+), you will find that this type of attitude is not tolerable. This is not about being liberal. It is about being sensitive and respectful toward others, whether you are attending a liberal university or a conservative university.
Holy cow, let me get this straight. You hijack someone else’s thread, calling me out for being discriminatory towards my own race, all the while defending your personal beliefs while playing the victim because of an offensive username. I don’t get it. Who’s the villain here, me the hate-mongering racist or the 11 characters that make up my username? Stop playing the victim here, kid. This thread isn’t (and was never) about you.
You got strong beliefs. I respect that (I live in CA and have to put up with people like you all the time, sadly). Take your principles and get out of here. The thread was not about your upbringing in America nor is it about some ancient grudge you bear against someone who called you a chinaman or chink when you grew up in the US. As far as I’m concerned, shut your eyes and turn off your monitor, switch the tab, or whatever you have to do to prevent the word “Chinaman” from triggering some sort of PTSD meltdown in your brain. Consider seeking some psychologist for your PTSD. That’s not my problem, and you aren’t getting any pity points here, bud.
This thread was about the nuclear and chemical engineering joint major at Berkeley. I was looking for someone who is currently completing the degree to let me know about how many people there are in the program. I couldn’t find this anywhere else online, and my friends at Berkeley aren’t chemistry-related majors.
tl;dr: I really don’t need a lesson in political correctness. I’ve experienced enough of your kind already. Please don’t hijack my thread.
Hey chill. I did not call you discriminatory or anything like it. I was just pointing out the offensive and the disrespectful connotation of the word you are using as your screen name. Many of the older Asians and people of color overcame adversities and obtacles to get here (even in this forum). To put this at a level you can understand, I would BE VERY SURPRISED if someone in this forum used the “N” word or and names like it as a screen name just as I was surprised to see your screen name.
Back to advising. At the end of my original response to this post, I did mention nuclear engineering jobs for a public utility and those jobs have been disminishing primarily due the public and government concern with safety. I like to add that there are jobs with the US government (i.e., Dept. of Navy nuclear subs.), aerospace defense contractors or you might google this.
