Lemaitre1 i am a citizen and what you said just blew my mind !! so your saying i shouldn’t complete any of them ??? and does every one agree with Lemaitre1 /??

^
I say no. I rather not delay med school for 2 years. Just do well when you transfer and that will show you can handle UC level work.

Most people do some of the pre-reqs at CC and UC anyways.

Also are you positive you want to do nuclear engineering? If you are 100% dedicated to med school, I say forget it.

ok fine ! forget about nuclear but what about material ??

oh and thanks for the advice about med school pre reqs

Seriously, everyone here is giving you the best advice. Engineering at Berkeley is extremely competitive and intensive. It’s not something you major in simply because you’re interested in it. If you do not want to work in that field or a related one, don’t bother. If your ultimate goal is to go to medical school, you need to focus all of your energy on that goal and do it in the most efficient way possible. Don’t ~50% + students get rejected from medical school? They WILL take someone with a stronger GPA and preparation over you. The research and extra curricular opportunities you’ll be offered going a totally different route will most likely not be relative to medical school. If you’re interested in both I’d suggest biomedical engineering, but you’d still risk a lower GPA. From Berkeley’s Website:

“Berkeley Engineering Student Average GPA
Freshman:2.80
Sophomore:3.16
Junior: 3.17
Seniors: 3.25
Overall: 3.20”

^^ exactly. If you do apply to Cal and still want to go the pre-med route, I would once again suggest applying to L&S as either Comp Sci (if you still like it and have the background for it) or Integrative Bio (IB) but I wouldn’t recommend applying to Molecular & Cell Bio (MCB). I actually found some of the majors within CNR pretty interesting. My second choice major (had we been allowed to choose one) would have probably been Microbial Bio in CNR. Or again, you could major in anything (though I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have the pre-reqs finished for much else).

As for applying to med school, even if you take your lower division pre-reqs at the CC level, doing well in upper division science classes will show that you do have the necessary background. I don’t believe it will negatively influence your chances. It is quite common for students to go back to CC to take their pre-reqs for things like med/pharm/dental school. I know a bunch of people that have gone to a professional school that had went back to CC to finish pre-med classes that weren’t required by their major or who had transferred from a CC in the first place.

Note: One of them majored in Linguistics for their undergrad, one in Psych (had to take almost all pre-reqs at CC), one in Biological Anthropology, and 3 in some kind of Biological Science (went back for stats). All of those people are at UCSF or UCLA and one just graduated from UPenn. Another majored in Finance at UCI and went back to CC to take ALL pre-reqs and got into 8/10 pharm schools he applied to. Another double majored in Biochem and Eng Lit and is now at UCLA for her dental residency. Of course, there is no sure pathway to being accepted but I just wanted to mention some of the less stereotypical ones of people I actually know.

THANK YOU EVERYONE SOO MUCH !! this has been very helpful !!!

i think you’re trying to take the hardest major possible to make you look more appealing to medical school, and it might hurt you. do you know the magnitude of nuclear engineering major? people who go into those majors is for a reason, to pursue those careers, you’re trying to get to medical school, you don’t need a “traditional” or engineering degree.

i was like you, a bio major looking to dental school. but found out these school more admire diverse students not only by ethnic origin but by undergrad major, so now I am a poly sci major, and that seems fairly easy, and I will basically MINOR in biology, so i can do my pre-reqs for what i now want to pursue (but KME says I shouldnt) - medical school.

and im going to do research at UC, participate in clubs, get a 3.8+ GPA from my poly sci and attempt a >3.7 sci GPA, and will possibly look better than your 3.2 nuclear engineering degree (no shots fired).

justsaying.

UC = that path to medical school, if you play your cards right.

i am jewish by the way i <3 Israel & so does UCI (but might be looking at UC Davis for next fall)
