NuIn

First off, Melbourne is amazing! I went there in 2012 and it was the best time. Secondly, to answer your question, some people do find the transition a little difficult. It all depends on what you make of it! Northeastern cycles each semester because of its coop program (as you may know). Because of this many students don’t feel out of place coming back to move in. Upon coming back to Northeastern, they have an extra curricular activities fair, where if your into dance, a capella, musicals, etc., you can join (or create) a club! It’s a great way of meeting new people. Lastly, transitions aren’t difficult if you put yourself out there. Be that person that says “hi!” next to a classmate, join that club you’ve always wanted to, and you will always have your friends you’ve made through the NUin program there to back you up! If you have any questions, just inbox me! :)

I was accepted to the program yesterday and it seems like a great opportunity, but the cost is a bit intimidating. My family’s EFC is nearly 23k, so it seems like attending NU may be an impossibility at this point. However, I know that tuition at NU fluctuates due to co-op programs and study abroad…so, if I were to accept this offer, how much would my tuition change over the next 3 or 4 years? Has anyone had a similar situation in which they received grants for spending 2 semesters in a year at NU despite not receiving grants in their NUin year? Basically, I just want to know if NU could become more affordable for me after my first year in the NUin program. If it can, then I could probably consider NU as a viable option for me.

As a parent I was very disappointed and somewhat offended when my D got this decision. At first I thought the opportunity was kind of neat as she had traveled to Europe the previous summer and was hoping to study abroad some point in her college career. However after looking at the cost and personally believing that study abroad the first semester is just too much change at once, I started to get upset. D has other offers from terrific schools, some with better stats than NU, and has gotten nice merit awards from all of them. This was pretty much a slap in the face.

@crazymamaB: Such petulance from a disappointed 17 year old may be excusable. But coming from a parent it is just bad form.

Why would I spend that kind of money on NEU when she could go to Cornell? No formal acceptance yet, but received a likely letter. Seriously, many students would be overwhelmed starting their college experience overseas. Sorry you find this to be “bad form.” Did I insult your favorite school? Consider us even then.

I think Tom was noting your attitude, not that your D should attend NEU. Taking offense from an admissions decision in particular. I too would agree. I would also agree that you have much better options on the table, and you should be happy with that rather than being angry you got a less than perfect decision from a school that you probably wouldn’t have attended anyways given the other options you mentioned.

Bump for recent Nuin admissions discussions.
Also as a follow up, My D is currently in her second co-op and has thrived at both. In interviews for co-op positions it is discussed simply as “your study abroad semester”. The interviewers seem to view it as a sign of maturity and flexibility; they have no “stigma” to it AT ALL. My D is also on track to graduate on time (actually early-7 semesters-unless she picks up the double major instead of the major/minor she is currently pursuing.)

Wrong group

I was looking on the northeastern honors page and it said you can apply after first semester freshman year if you have a minimum of a 3.8 GPA. If you study in the NUin program and meet this requirement are you eligible to apply?

I think I recall someone saying that grades from NUin don’t transfer, so if that’s the case you wouldn’t be able to apply after fall semester. But you can apply for Honors after your first or second semester of freshman year, so it would be possible to join after the spring for sure.

Thanks! Although it seems pretty challenging. A 3.8 in college is high…especially if you are taking science classes!

@joplinjello I did Nu.in Greece the fall of 2013, and nanotechnology is correct - grades don’t transfer. You still get the transfer credits but the specific grades you earned are not part of your Northeastern GPA. You will have to apply in the fall to the honors program if you are able to earn a GPA above 3.8.
