WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm the first one to ever post here!!!!!!!!

Second one to post here, and I requested this forum! WOO! haha

Anyone care to talk about how they like SVA?

I wish this thread were alive

What kinds of grades / stats do you need to gain admission ?

My daughter attended the cartooning Saturday class/pre-college program last semester and is taking color photography (dark room techniques) this semester. The professors she has worked with so far seem to be both highly qualified as well as gifted teachers. These 2 qualities don't always go hand-in-hand so it's been a very rewarding experience for her so far. SVA is one of the colleges she's considering.
I'd like to hear from others who are considering SVA.

My daughter has applied to SVA. We visited in February and the vibes were good. I liked the area of NYC in which the school is located: city residential, with lots of shops, places to eat, grocery stores and the like. Also, there are a number of other college residences in the area (NYU, Bernard Baruch), so there's a good number of other college students around. What I would like to hear, from some one who goes to SVA, is what the school is actually like. Good teachers? Interesting courses? Lots of work or not so much? Decent residences? Good facilities and equipment? Competent or incompetent administration? Come on. Somebody from the school. Let us know.

My daughter is transferring from Rowan in southern NJ(which she didn't like--too boring)to SVA in the fall for film editing. She has stayed overnight in the New Res. with a friend who goes there and loved it. The New Res. is right next door to the main administration/academic building on 23rd street. We were very impressed with the presentation given for the film program. We're waiting anxiously for the financial aid/scholarship notices to come. Should be any day. I wish she had just gone straight to SVA instead of going to Rowan first. She was thrilled with being in the middle of the city after being stuck in the middle of nowhere at Rowan. I think this will be a much better fit for her, and she'll be doing what she loves.

Oh, the academic stats for SVA are fairly low...its a portfolio school. Average SAT scores are only in the 1500 range, and that's for all 3! And GPA's are only around 3.1. But the portfolios of these kids can be amazing. That's what you are competing against. You can get a bit of an idea what the levels are by checking out their website, although that is showing work that is by students that are already there.

I have a friend who got into SVA for graphic design. Do you recommend which dorm he should live?

My daughter stayed in the New Res one night and liked it. It's very expensive. She has also seen---I think it's called Washington?--and said it's very very tiny. The dorms there are very pricey compared to other schools. It might actually be cheaper to get a few friends together and get an apartment, but that's hard if you're from out of town and don't know the city, or don't have friends there to rent with. That's the only info I have.

Our son is visiting both SVA and SCAD in November for photography. Any insight that would be helpful on visiting SVA?

SVA has been the school that I have wanted to go to for the last 4 years running. I heard that SCAD recently lost some accreditation; but what ever you do, do NOT look into Columbia College Chicago.

Hey, has anyone received the Silas Rhodes scholarship? I will be applying with my undergraduate degree for the fine art program. My cummulative gpa will likely be just under a 3.0 in Canadian standards. Does anyone know what grades they calculate when making considerations for the scholarship? Will it be marks from the last year or the marks from the combined gpa of the classes that I will be transferring over?

And, if anyone who received the scholarship has any advice on portfolio requirements or online samples, it would be MUCH appreciated… I can really only attend if I receive some sort of scholarship since I am a Canadian resident :frowning:

Thanks!

hii…i am an international student… am in confusion whether to join SVA or Vancouver film school…can anyone recommend me which one is the better one…and also am interested in 3D nd visual effects program
