Number of AP exams...

Okay, so I am very interested in learning and stuff, and I have wanted to take more AP exams and such, however my school does not allow AP classes until junior year... and at that level only offers APUSH and Eng Lang (took both this year), then as a senior offers US Gov, Eng lit, Bio, Cal AB, and Stats (I am taking all but stats due to schedule conflict).... last year i asked if i could self-study exams and was told no repeatidly.. so i was wondering how many exams is too many? Heres my list (no i dont plan to take ALL of these but hear me out)-

Lit(Class)
Bio""
US Gov""
Calc AB""

Self-Study Possibilities-
Macroecon(taking honors economics, not AP, not offered)
Microecon ""
Environ Sci (taking AP Bio)
Human Geo (easy to self-study, interests me)
Psychology (easy to self-study, possible minor for me)
Comparitive Pol and Gov (paired with US Gov... majoring in Political Science)
Statistics (im good in math, easy to self study i hear)
Art History (to get my credit really, interests me some, easy self0study i hear)

European History(could take online course, ive already had APUSH, have a friend that took it before he moved here, i like history)

Thats 13 exams (4 classes, 9 self-study)...

Suggestions?

Self-study Stats, Comparative Pol/Gov, Psychology, and Marcoecon. Considering your major and minor, I would take these exams. And continue with all the APs your school offers. Your school shouldn’t tell you not to self-study, you can go right ahead, and if your school won’t proctor the exams you want to take: call collegeboard and ask about other testing sites.

I took 6 exams this year (10 total), and that was enough for me. Stats wasn’t bad to self study, but it was a bit tough in that it kept getting pushed aside for my 5 actual classes, so that’s something to keep in mind. Also, remember that this is going to be May of your senior year–that might end up being an issue. I didn’t really study as hard as I could/should have because of that. I don’t mean to discourage you, but just be realistic. And your school not letting you self study is just ridiculous, but you can get around that by going to an alternate testing site.

This is what I’m thinking of doing…

Ill take-
Bio
US Gov
Cal AB

But ill drop Lit, we will mostly likely have a bad teacher, with that bad teacher, i believe i got credit on AP Lang, so i think im good in Eng LA…

Then Self-Study-

Comparitive Gov and Pol
Psychology
Macroecon
Human Geography

I really don’t think I could take on a math AP aside from calc… so im not gonna take Stats…

Thats a total of 7, however ill be studying all of them (not Macro) with a few friends, and HG and Psych are suppose to be easy…

how does that sound?

Is it necessary to self-study exams? I’m not sure why, but it seems like more and more people are self-studying to impress colleges. Just through my school, I’ll end up taking 8 IB exams and 13 APs. I honestly don’t want to study any by myself b/c I’ll have taken all the ones that interest me (almost), and I don’t have the time with ECs. >_>.

Vaeliant- my school offers only 7 AP classes… im taking all but Stats (the teacher litterally says every year, dont take the AP exam, cause im not a great teacher)… and im interested in these subjects… but no classes to take, and im not an IB school… i really dont even know what IB is… so yeah i want to self-study but im still gonna do my ECs

Well I mean, in your case, I could see that self studying has a point. There are probably a lot of areas that you still wish to explore on your on. I just don’t want to, lol. If I feel obligated to, I’ll probably take the econs and the governments, but I know that material already, so it’ll just be for college, not because I want to learn.

What I’m asking is, will colleges be like ‘He didn’t take advantage of the ability to self-study. REJECTION.’ ? That’s an obvious exaggeration, but will I be penalized ?

Okay, I mean, honestly, I do not see the advantage to self-studying your senior year; at least not 9 exams. If you really are interested by one or two of those subjects, then by all means go for it, but seriously, do not take them all. You’re college AP portfolio is DONE for college apps. I highly doubt saying you are self-studying for APs in your senior year will influence your admissions decision, seeing that you could just not take the exam.

Dreamsofivy- 1. Can you read I said i wasnt gonna take all of them, then if you look to my later post i narrowed it down due to actual you know helpful posts…

Its not all about college admissions, its about getting credit, and learning about the things that are interesting to me…

Its better than having on my college app that ive taken 2 AP exams (ALL we could take our junior year at my school) and then having 4 off periods and 4 regular classes

No I totally get what you are saying, and I took the extreme case. I understand that you want to broaden your horizons and that is very admirable, but colleges always say that they judge you based upon the curriculum YOUR school offers. You will be penalized like other kids would be had they been offered 10+ APs. I would actually strongly recommend that you take some sort of community college course, because not only is that tangible, it is also a good way to show dedication.

My school does duel-credit on campus, but they only accept the credit for 3 classes… those three classes are bio (taking AP), english (got that credit with AP Lang (99% sure)), and College Algebra (took that this year)… but so i guess a question-

Does your high school have to recognize it as duel-credit to count for much? then theres also the fact that the local comm college dosent have much in way of classes i could be interested in, its a nursing/engineer/music college really… and it would take up a ton of my time, i have so many EC and i have a pat time job

Yeah that’s legit. Just a suggestion :).

lol .
