Number of Homeschoolers Growing Nationwide

"As the dissatisfaction with the U.S. education system among parents grows, so does the appeal of homeschooling. Since 1999, the number of children who are being homeschooled has increased by 75%. Although currently only 4% of all school children nationwide are educated at home, the number of primary school kids whose parents choose to forgo traditional education is growing seven times faster than the number of kids enrolling in K-12 every year." ...

Yawn,

Is this even news?

4% is news to me! I had no idea it was so high.

PFFFFT! Taking LOSS OF INCOME into account, it’s WAAAYY higher than that!

500-600$ to educate a Child

Private: 3-10k

Public: around 6-12k

Homeschooling is seemingly cheaper

Kypdurron, that doesn’t take into account the indirect cost of losing one source of income, or at least cutting back on it by having a parent teach.

Geek,

Totally agree! During the high school years, I definitely can spend upwards of 3k per student (that would include all music related activities as I have musicians in the house). Since we are a single income family, we definitely scrimp to insure excellence in homeschooling. I bargain hunt, for sure (free symphonies, free university audits, mentors, used books, etc), but some things just cost (music lessons and good quality musical instruments; good local classes).

We’ve been blessed to have financial help along the way but we definitely live the moderate life (at least in American terms-LOL!).

I know last year’s MIT class had 1% homeschoolers.

@Doe:
Your right. I forgot to take that into consideration.
