Hey guys, I am really confused about the total in class hours weekly in UCLA. I calculated, if I take 16 Units of classes, I will only need to be in class for total of 10 hours weekly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! isn't that too short ? compare to Berkeley (or other schools), it will take me over 16 hours (doesn't matter if the school use quarter or semester system because I am just talking about the number of hour in school weekly)

it depends on the classes....

there isnt really a direct correlation between unit count and class time.

it depends entirely on how many classes you take and which ones they are. i've had some classes (primarily lab classes) that are 10 hours per week and others than are only three hours per week. And units don't necessarily transfer evenly into hours. Last quarter I only took 9 units and I was in class for 14 hours per week...

one of my classes is quarter is 4 units, 6 hours class time. another is 6 units, 6 hours class time. so yeah, YMMV.

Sorry that I didn't specify, I am in Bus Econ major (college of letter and Science) not Chem or Physis class that we don't have any lab. I also use classes in Berkeley (econ also) to compare. The result was, 4 Units in LA = 2.5 hour. 4 Units in Ber = 4.5 hours (doesn't matter quarter or semester)

You'll also take more units at UCLA because we're on a quarter system. 15 units/semester at berkeley = 30 units = 135 hours. 16 units/quarter in LA = 48 units = 120 hours.

i think you're neglecting to count the time for discussion sections.

Umm...a 3 unit class at Berkeley is 4.5 units here, not 4:4.5

To Lax
In semester system, the hours is spread over 18 weeks (instead of 12 like us). so the number of weekly hours for a 4 units semester or 4 units quarter class is the same (just different in the length 12 Vs 18).

To VTECaddict:
That's my another big concern; almots all Econ classes (usually 4 units) in Berkeley has a discussion session (3 hours lecture, 1.5 discussion). But in LA, except a few class (like Econ 11, 101, 102 ) have discussion sections, the majority of others classes doesn't have any (also, the lecture is only 2.5 hours for a 4 units class. )

To Mrspam:
Yeah, a 4 units class at Berkeley is 6 Units at LA, but don't forget, their classes spread over 18 weeks. so the weekly hours of a 4 units class should be the same in both school

One too many of course!

What is your major? Have you ever heard of a lab? They are usually 3 units, but feel like 6.

Biz Econ, no Lab

Well what's your point? LA students have it easier than Berkeley?

i took 16 units last quarter and had 23 hours of class/week. i'm taking 16 units right now and have almost 22/week. (8 hours music theory, 4 hours math, 3 hours 40 min microbiology, 6 hours orchestra)

like mrmoo implied, # of units does not reflect the hours you need to put into a class.

^_^, so many hours for music. I also heard that in many other majors in LA, students have to study in school a lot. But as I know so far, for Econ and Mgmt (my major), I will only need to be in classes for about 10-12 hours weekly for 16 units.

^ obviously you're not going to take our words for it. just wait 'til you get here - you'll eventually understand...

Well you're probablys till looking at lower divs or pre major classes. As far as I know there aren't too many for econ so maybe thats why you're only seeing 10-16 hours. just don't be fooled into thinking it will be easy though

well why would it affect you anyway emblem? even if you did go to class regularly, i doubt your grades would be much better. perhaps you should go back to old-school RPGs - not because you might be good at them (doubtful) - but because you'll probably not run off with a bachelor's in the future anyway. might as well do the best next thing - practice video games and hopefully, secure a bid into an east asian mmorpg league.

To Fire and mme: I only look at upper division class. I don't think the classes is gonna be easy, but I just think that if the classes hour is longer, I will be able to learn more from the professors (not only in the text, but also in the real Biz world). I also don't expect longer class hour will result in a better grade ^_^. Thx for your input

i hear UCLA's econ department is heavily based on theory, and doesnt really touch on "real world" type stuff.

I hope what you heard is not correct T_T
