Numbers Game

ND CLEARLY plays a numbers game. Once you have the stats (Over 1450 with 700+ in each section, 34 and top 5%) then you are admitted. I am convinced. Everyone from CC was admitted with this profile. They didn't reject or defer ONE applicant with a high 1400 or 1500. Only exception is for affirmative action where there is a HUGE amount of leeway (scores in the 500). This is why their average SAT stats are so high. Maybe I'm bitter because I was flat out rejected, but that doesn't seem like a holistic process to me.

Idk if they promise a holistic process, but I wouldn’t be surprised if ND did use just numbers.

I agree with you Ny0rker.

I also feel (but have no evidence) that ND’s borderline applicants can get an acceptance if they are full-payers. ND is NOT need blind and the ability to pay it all seems to give one a boost.

I guess I was a benefactor…of Affirmative Action!!!

@fencersmother,

I can see that. On December 9th, they told me to send in my financial form (which was missing from their files). I would expect them to tell me earlier or not tell me at all. I am international so I am required to fill one out, but they were polite enough to ask. They wanted it filled with specific details and bank forms (no other school has wanted it this detalied).

I havent received my decision yet. I live in MA, and it seems like MA doesn’t exist in USPS’s mind…although there was a blizzard on Saturday.

I am international who can fully pay…I have 1400 on my SAT. I guess I’m borderline…
I hope I get in tho

@shyman,

you must be so happy right now…i wish i could feel the same way. but you deserve it more but one thing…is ND offering you financial aid?

i would also like to point out that my admissions officer was rude, not intelligent, and didn’t offer me any information about the school when I sat down with him to learn more about ND. same thing goes with the admissions staff/secretaries

Yeah they are. The only way I was considering Notre Dame was because they contacted me after I was a Questbridge Finialist. They rescinded the full-ride after my guidance counselour failed to mail them my offical transcript. Likewise they saw my application read my essays I wrote for questbridge and select me; however they did not have my grade so they were unable to make a decision by December 1 so they considered me for early action. So now I got into Notre Dame with a decent financial aid where I will use outside scholarship to make up what I can not pay for.

Not true. My son received deferral today. CR 750, M 710 and top 5%. 3.91 UW GPA. 3 sport athlete and varisty captain, meaningful ECs.

To fencersmother and easyasabc - we are also full payers.

i believe the cut off was a 1470 for acceptance actually. another poster posted that someone in admissions told him this… i believe

EA is typically strong scores among other things–I think it is no secret that ND is looking for the strongest applicants in EA. It is indeed a risk to apply EA, esp if scores might be borderline.

Cannot agree with the 1470 cutoff. DD was above that, not by much,strong GPA, plenty of EC’s including leadership, Deferred…

And while we may not qualify for any FA, she did check YES to that question. While I knew that may keep her from getting an acceptance, I also knew with 2 in college that the annual costs would exceed our financial means.

I’m a white girl from So Cal, with a 1440 and was admitted. very competitive school, tons of aps, strong gpa, lots of EC’s (w/ leadership), good recs, and essays. It can be done. There isn’t a number you HAVE to meet. (and I will be needing financial aid to attend)

also, from ND site:
"Does Notre Dame have a need-blind admissions policy, and if so, what is it?

Notre Dame has a need-blind admissions policy for all U.S. citizens and permanent residents. A student’s financial situation is not considered in the evaluation of his or her application. Notre Dame is committed to meeting 100% of each family’s demonstrated financial need in its need-based financial aid process, which is completely separate from its admissions process."

Listen, this is EA, so naturally, Notre Dame is only going to accept the best applicants which are those that are strong in every category including test scores. In RD, there will be acceptances with lower scores - trust me if any school cares about more than just stats, it is ND - they are trying to build a certain community around certain characteristics and stats don’t play a major role in this - they are important, but there is no strict cut-off, though there are a range that you shouldn’t be in or else you are pushing it.

Agree with Hawk. Also, I got a 1370/2100 and a 31 ACT and wasn’t denied. I did get deferred though so hopefully I’ll be more competitive RA
