nw vs. uchicago

i posted this on the NW board, but i'd like to hear what the UChicago supporters have to say on the topic...

The southern weather is so much better...

Both schools are excellent, but both have very different "feels." I would recommend spending time at each, ask yourself where you could most see yourself. My S did this and chose Chicago, he had a friend who did this and chose NW.

yeah i suppose a visit would do me a lot of good haha

The atmospherics are quite different at the two universities. NW is more preppy, Chicago is more intellectual. This is reinforced by Chicago's dedication to a "core" curriculum. But this characterization just speaks to the modal student and not to their range of interests. For instance both universities have a lot of pre-professional students (premed, prebusiness, etc., with respect to their intent, even if they are not enrolled in specific Pre- programs). Overall, they each have some top 10 departments/programs, but Chicago has quite a few more than NW.

I visited both schools this summer and one part of my day really reinforced why I would chose UChicago over NWU anyday.

NWU has this hill area right on Lake Michigan. It's a cute little spot with some trees and benches where students can relax and just look out into the Lake. There's also a gorgeous view of the Chicago skyline from this spot. So, at NWU you can sit there and look at Chicago, or, at the University of Chicago, you can be IN Chicago. Yeah, NWU is only like a 40 minute ride away, but UChicago is about 5 minutes from the CBD. That's a huge difference to me.

Also, the atmospheres are just completley different. I found UChicago to be more diverse in terms of interest. Everybody had a passion about something. At NWU, nobody seemed passionate about anything.

interesting responses... very insightful. could anyone who attends uchicago clarify the rumors that "parties don't exist at uchicago." this is what i hear, and i'm not a partier by any stretch of the imagination, but i would like to have some fun in college. what is social life at uchicago like?

There are definitely parties at UChicago. I can't count the number of times my UChic friends are away with something like "KEGS" in their away messages, or "Team LEGAL AGE> Plan 'Party' part 'get the goods' in progress."

No parties at U. Chicago?

I live 4 blocks from campus. Friday night, there were, by police estimate, several hundred U of C students right across the street for a party. Yes, the police broke it up because they were blocking traffic etc., and said they were just moving to a party two blocks away with more space.

Seems the party had a few kegs of Corona, at only $5 per person. (have this from a good source...)

Yea, they have parties...

The difference with Chicago parties is that they aren't an all week affair like a they would be at a 'party school'--unless you're into the drug scene which is quiet and never ending. Also, the girls aren't going to get dressed up for you and act like idiots at these get togethers (not that they are uptight, mind). On the upside, as a woman you don't have to get dressed up and act like and idiot at frat parties once or twice a week, which can be a strain... The only problem with the social scene at Chicago as far as I am concerned is that there is a bit of a stalker problem for both sexes. People are as intense about their dating choices as they are about everything else which can be a little disconcerting if you weren't planning on getting married or shacking up with someone at the ripe old age of eighteen. In one dorm, everyone had unofficially switched dorm rooms by the end of the year (except the evangelicals) so that the place had been transformed into undergraduate 'married student housing.' That is some social life!

Thats kinda scary. I definately won't get married until much later ...

Besides, if there isn't a party cauz people are too busy studying or something you can always start a party! Get some Theme, some music, something to drink, call up ur mates and watch it unfold! Its much more complicated than that but its the basic idea!

How do the 2 schools compare regarding acceptance %? My Princeton Review Guide says that NU has a 33% acceptance rate while Chicago has a 40% Any truth to that?

Would that just be becuase Chicago has higher qulaified applicants?

How about for ED? Do you know which school accepts more, or if anyone has %s that would be great.

thanks.
