My father moved into a senior facility with cottages, apartments and memory care. He lived in a cottage. He recently moved out and purchased a condo. He is 84 but a very active 84. He found he didn’t have much in common with most of the rest of the people in his community. He still, bikes, exercises, travels etc. where most of the others in his community are getting around on walkers. They were nice but he found it too constraining for him at this time. He also rented which was expensive. I believe his hope is that he can connect to a variety of people and stay in touch with people his age and older but remain active with others who are enjoying a more active life style. I expect things can change again and will support him in what he chooses unless he begins to show a mental decline. I hope he will be happy in his new place.
Just over 4 years ago, my husband and I sold our home and moved into a condo in a new 55+ community. We had been looking forward to shedding the responsibilities of house-owning, and spending our time traveling, visiting friends, using the on-site fitness center, and playing bridge. When Covid came 6 months later, those plans went away or were put on hold.
Although our timing was awful, both for our anticipated plans and selling the house, we are glad to have moved into this community. We were surprised that far more neighbors were under 60 than our 70, but we appreciate them and there is plenty to do. We can pick and choose how to get involved, and love meeting the many dogs and their owners on our daily walks, especially since we lost our dear pet 2 years ago and decided not to get a new one.
Our family is small and we don’t have grandchildren, but we are also glad to chat with and about our neighbors’ grands. And we are slowly getting back to the plans we made a few years ago.
