Hi. I am an international student and I have so far been accepted to every college I applied to. However my parents have only allowed to let me go to NYC colleges. Hence out of all the colleges NYIT and Hofstra are in close proximity of NYC. I received presidential scholarship from both, so tuition for both is pretty much the same. The housing on the other hand I am confused about. Hofstra is huge and has everything I want in a college, but the location is in Heamstead(they call it is a ghetto or something) and so far the neighborhood sounds scary. Can anyone help me out with this? I cant understand from OCEANS away whether it is safe to go there or not?
NYIT on the other hand is in the city, definitely not my first choice but since its right in the middle of the city, which has a very diverse population, and is a place I feel I may easily blend in(I come from a very crowded city!) However NYIT Manhattan campuses look like huge corporate buildings and I am afraid I might be missing out the college experience. (the long island campus is not an option for me, since I deliberately applied to Manhattan).

It would be great if anyone could provide me any info regarding these colleges. I could use all the details i can get since, once again, I am choosing a college from thousands of miles away.
HELP!

Can you explain why your parents limit you to NYC?
NYIT is going to be heavily commuter and indeed you won’t have a real college experience in American terms (no campus, students mostly go to class and don’t live there) but the environment is better than Hofstra’s.

Thank you for your reply.
I’m limited to NYC because I have relatives there so my parents think they can help me with whatever I need help with, also as I mentioned before I come from a crowded city, my parents think I will become depressed in low population areas. Not that i agree with them but since they are paying they get to call some shots.
I am still exploring my options, also I was recently accepted to Stony Brook and Fordham I hope will accept.
I honestly am so confused, I really want a pleasant campus to spend the four college years. @MYOS1634

Stony Brook is MUCH MUCH better than either NYIT or Hoftstra. It’s not IN NYC though (neither is Hofstra!) It’s one of the state’s flagships. (New York State has 64 public schools/campuses. The top 5 are Stony Brook, Binghamton, Geneseo, Buffalo, Albany, and they’re called flagships. Strictly speaking, Geneseo isn’t a flagship but the state’s Honors College.) Fordham would be the best for a pleasant experience, especially for an international student.

I did get into all the colleges you mentioned. Except Ganeseo, I never applied there. I guess I will be looking forward to Fordham and Stony Brook then.
Thank you so much for your advice @MYOS1634

If you can, I’d pick Binghamton because it’s less commuter and more residential (the students actually live on or near campus, rather than living at home and commuting from home.) Fordham first of course, but Binghamton before Stony Brook for the quality of the experience (academic quality is similar, alhough varying depending on major).
