NYLF or NSLC??

they sound almost exactly the same to me..which one is a better program? I want to do medicine and go to hospitals, shadow doctors and stuff so also whichever one does more of the hands on things.

Well. I can't speak for nslc but I can tel you a little about when i attended nylf med...
I attended the Philadelphia 2008 summer 1 session (at villanova) and absolutely loved it. Before I decided to attend I spoke to the 2 friends from my school who had gone and they both raved about it. I sort of put it off as them just being proud and inflating the experience. I was proven wrong though as I, myself, ended up making some of the strongest friendships I have ever made, learning so much with other bright individuals, and having so much fun. It was pretty demanding (physically)... you get up early and do things until 10 pm every day. Everyone is put into a group of about 15 kids and the bulk of your time is spent with your group in "sessions". The sessions encompassed a variety of things ranging from debates to learning to do stitches on bananas. You see some pretty renowned speakers come in and then get to ask questions afterwards. We saw a live surgery (a total knee replacement) and got to ask questions during it which was pretty cool. They do quite a few events int he evenings... ice cream socials, karaoke (hilarious haha), pizza etc which are all pretty fun. We went to the amusement park there for a day aswell. At some point your counselor shows you a list of hospitals that you get to put down your priorities from. Later on you find out which hospital you are assigned. I was assigned the shriner's childrens hospital in philadelphia and went with 3 other kids there. All of the hospitals did their own things (some kids got to go into surgeries and got scrubs and stuff) but we got a tour of the whole facility and then all went off to a different ward to spend most of the day. I ended up shadowing a few doctors and got to see patients which was pretty fun. Another day we all went to different medical schools where we were given alot of presentations and q&a sessions to learn about medical school admissions which was intensely enlightening. We got to see cadavers and stuff which was pretty cool.
I sort of rambled as I ran through my memory but to sum it all up I loved it and think it was worth every penny (having payed for it myself). Before I was iffy on becoming a doctor and nylf was a huge help in my firming up on the decision to become one. I thought it was pretty hands on with the one on one doctor shadowing and how we implemented alot of what we learned (measuring blood pressure, comparing our analysis of cases to the actual diagnosis)

yeah but personally it wasn't worth the price tag as finan aid is almost non-existent. I found I could do most of the same things in my own spare time... like visit med schools.

I too also attended NYLF, although in san francisco and stayed at the berkeley campus. it was amazing! i thoroughly enjoyed myself. we got to see cadavers as well and meet with doctors, had a very interesting presentation from a professor that taught about liver research at Stanford, and did similar activities that bparadise highlighted. before attending i was not sure if i would like medicine but after attending my interest in the medical and science field has definitely gone up! overall, i loved it and have made new friends across the country that i still keep in touch with.

Other than learning sutures and taking blood pressure, do our learn how to do anything else such as intubation, laparoscopic surgeries, or CPR? Your other information was very helpful by the way!! BParadis
