I think right now, the incoming class is 5% Emirati (according to the NYUAD website).

Submitted my application last month for ED I… given that the first Candidate weekend is in November 18, when would the first group of candidates be contacted?

Yeah, we have about 5%-ish emirates, and 7% middle eastern (but these figures are really useless considering that 5%=6 people). They don’t lower the bar set. The majority of the teachers are hot shots. Dave sciccatano (i know i’m butching that name) heads science, and he is awesome. David levvering lewis teaches some humanity classes, which is really funny considering that his classes involve use of the books he’s written (he actually refers to himself as “the author” when referencing it in class). The facilities for science and engineering are going to be pretty excellent by the time you arrive. For now, we have a twenty minute trip to a facility with labs, equipment, modeling junk, whatever. There are no classes taught via video conference.

If studying abroad is your thing, then this place is perfect for you.

On non-winter breaks, i have the option of going to egypt for a weekend trip. So you know, ****'s tight.

Oh, and also, there are some things about the party/drug stuff here. Basically, weed and/or drugs are non-existent here. Penalties are strict, and no-one wants to get into that mess. Alcohol on the other hand is obscenely easy to get. If you’re not muslim, they’ll sell you boatloads and never card (just go to liquor stores near hotels). Not to mention, liquor here is nearly half as expensive as in the states. In conclusion, the party scene is different, but it still exists.

So, erm… anyone else been selected for a candidate weekend? (I can’t help but compare the relative quietness of this thread right now compared to last year around this time when people were discussing NYUAD and candidate weekends left right and centre!)

yes I was selected for the Nov one but I submitted my application mid-September so they’ve had a while to look over it. I only got this invite a few days ago so they might not have seen yours yet.

Thats awesome! are you excited/going? NYUAD is my #1 choice, so i know i would be. I HIGHLY doubt i’m gonna get an invitation to CW though because my stats aren’t too competitive. I guess i’ll just pray and wait. If you don’t mind me asking, what are your sat/act scores and gpa? It would be a breath of fresh air if they weren’t crazy high. They say they look at everything holistically, like EC’s, recs, essay, etc… and if they do, i should get an invite, but if they look at my ACT score and GPA heavily, i’m in trouble. btw were you nominated?

if you click page 12 of this thread you can see my ‘stats’… being from NZ, a small isolated country next to Australia I don’t understand the obsession with SAT scores and SATII scores. But I think my stats will be considered “high”, but from what others have said on this thread it definitely seems to be more than just about stats - also application essays etc etc.

Ahh, thanks for that. My scores aren’t even comparable to yours, but im hoping my international background, excellent recommendations, extracurriculars, class caliber, essays, and nomination will at least earn me a CW visit to Abu Dhabi. You never mentioned if you’ll be attending the weekend or not, will you? And to answer one of your previous questions, the vast majority of students who will be attending NYUAD will be on a Full scholarship. If you’re in the middle class in NZ, then you needn’t worry about Aid, as you will be one of many who will be on full ride.

Can I ask what country you’re from?
Unfortunately I can’t make the Nov weekend (have my leaving exams) and so I’ve asked to be swapped to December, and NYUAD has agreed.

When were you nominated? I was nominated way back in June and I have a suspicion that the Nov candidate weekend is mainly for nominated students (who may or may not have applied yet).

KiwiKid, i’m from the united states, but i was originally born in egypt, and i’ve lived in saudi arabia and canada as well. I was nominated about 2 weeks ago. My counselor missed the deadline, but i managed to get her an extension, haha. Wow, you were nominated in june? you must be REALLY interested, haha. I run home every day after school and check my email in hopes of seeing an email from them saying i’ve been invited, but still not luck. Dang, i was hoping to see you if i got accepted to the CW! But yea, congrats on getting the CW acceptance, you should be proud!

Elithefair: The deadline is november 1st, so as long as you get everything in by then, you should be good to go.

I have a feeling the Nov candidate weekend is only for nominated students from before the deadline (as well as early application submissions). December would therefore be the rest of ED applicants (as they would have a month to look over apps).

This means I might see either/both of you in Dec!

Yes, NYUAD is so my first choice school, it’s just so… global… and worldly… and new!

note: i was only nominated in June because our school year starts in March and ends in Dec so I’m about to graduate (and will have half a year of doing nothing/working/studying in advance)

Ahh gotcha. I wish I had such a long break before college! I really hope I get into the November CW though. The December is just so far away, and too close to the decision! But again, I probably won’t due to my low stats :(.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates The UAE’s highest judicial body says a man can beat his wife and young children as long as the beating leaves no physical marks.

The decision by the Federal Supreme Court shows the strong influence of Islamic law in the Emirates despite its international appeal in which foreign residents greatly outnumber the local population.

The court made the ruling earlier this month in the case of a man who left cuts and bruises on his wife and adult daughter after a beating.

It says the man was guilty of harming the women but noted that Islamic codes allow for “discipline” if no marks are left. It also says children who have reached “adulthood” approximately puberty cannot be struck.

The ruling was reported Monday in the Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National.

ummm, I’m from Russia, and don’t really get “nominated” thing… Does this mean your counselor recommended you to NYUAD?
I’m getting all my documents done by this Saturday… being a little nervous)

Rainbow: idk why you posted that, it’s bot relevant to anything we are talking about in this thread.

Eli: yes, your counselor is allowed to nominate 2 people if your school is on their list. The counselor would have had to travel to abu dhabi and attend a seminar though.

actually it would have just have been to a regional seminar - mine went to Australia for example.

‘nominated’ yeah is what IBathlete said - supposedly the world’s top 100 high schools have the opportunity to nominate up to two oustanding students for special consideration.

Rainbowboy - texas passed that immigration law - what does that say about people choosing to live/study in texas? Answer: absolutely nothing - it’s not as if people choose to study in texas because they support that law. And like someone else mentioned a loong time ago, without intercultural dialogue there will be no intercultural understanding. Would war be a better prospect?

Oh ok. Mine went to Abu dhabi, but that’s probably because we are the 6th best ib school in the world and 17th high school in the USA, so they wanted her in AD. And I don’t think we should pay much attention to rainbow. He’s probably just a thread ■■■■■. And just to clear things up with rainbow, vie lived in the middle east for 4 years, and I never had a problem with clashing culture laws. As long as you’re respectful and tolerant to the mother culture, you won’t have any problems.

KiwiKid, IBathlete,
thanks, I see it now.
well, high schools in Russia are completely different.
do you think there will be more students applying to NYUAD this year?

Yea, I definitely think will be more ppl. From things ive read, it seems like about 10,000 people will be applying to nyuad, and 37,000 to nyu ny. And they’re only taking 150 students in nyu ad… Seems almost impossible.
