NYU Academic Requirements

Does anyone know what the academic requirements are for NYU? I know some schools are somewhat more lenient with music admissions. I just want to get an idea if my son is in the ballpark. I sometimes see suggested schools on here that are very difficult to get into. So, it makes me wonder if there is more leeway than I think there is.

Here’s the info posted at NYU’s website:

We vistied NYU last summer because D is interested in Musical Theatre. They told us that they weight academics and audition at approximately 50% for admissions. I’m not sure if this is the same for music. I would think that given this weight and the general selectivity of the school, this is a tough admit.

I attended NYU/Steinhardt’s fall open house last November. According to my notes, the admissions rep. said that their review is 1/2 academics (and they will take the highest of your SAT or ACT scores OR 3 AP test scores), and 1/2 essay/recommendations/extracurriculars. They have NO CUTOFFS for music/arts majors, but you should be at least in the ballpark. NYU uses the Common Application, but has a supplemental application which includes some rather difficult short-answer essay questions. (This year one of them was “if you could take any person, real or fictional, from any time in history to any place and time you wanted, who would it be and where would you go?”) The admissions rep. said they want leaders, people who have made a difference in their school or community. They want people who can write, so the essays are very important.

And, of course, your music audition determines your admission into Steinhardt. The audition requirements are on the website. My S auditioned for composition and was not asked anything about theory, but generally you will be.
