Hi. I was recently accepted to NYU CAS and Macaulay at city college and was just wondering which one would be a better choice. Any thoughts?

(1) Is cost a factor - if so, how much is each school?

(2) What can you afford? Are both affordable?

(2) What are planing to study?

Macaulay is full ride with perks. For NYU, I got 39k in aid without loans. I guess I can afford NYU. I’m not really sure about my major but I want to go to med school.

Can your parents afford to pay $21,000/yr (or slightly more) for NYU out-of-pocket without any financial hardship?

No. I thought tuition was only like 43k?

Plus room and board and such…

how much without dorming? I live in NYC so that wont be a problem

In that case, NYU was quite generous – assuming fees, books and transportation you total cost of attendance should be around $45,000.

Would your parents pay the remaining roughly $6,000? Would you be taking that out in loans?

How much would Macaulay cost?

I would say that it’s probably down to personal preference since NYU was so generous with FA – which do you prefer?

I can’t decide between both of them. Macaulay gives full ride scholarship+laptop+pays for books and transportation. NYU gave me the 39k in aid and is really prestigious. Its a toguh decision for me

Med school will be freakishly expensive. If you can get all four years for free at Macaulay, that would be the way to go. Save all of your borrowing for med school.

One can easily make $6,000 over the summer and not have to take out any loans…

Personally, I would go for NYU, but of course, I’m biased.

What do you like about Macaulay and what do you like about NYU? Are you willing to get a summer job and save money to pay for NYU?

I like that NYU is prestigious and gives many opportuntunites. As for Macaulay, I like all the freebies a person gets and I could be relaxed and not worry about expenses. Macualay is a one time chance though while I could apply to NYU again in sophmore year. I don’t know if transfers are hard though, but I think I’ll stick with macaulay atleast for this year.

I expect that you will find that Macaulay has many opportunities as well. Enjoy your time there!

If you want to go to med school, go to macaulay.
It doesn’t make sense to pay, even if it is 21K and not the full tuition, for undergrad if you’re going to med school, where the “brand name” matters more. Macaulay has good opportunities too.

I’m leaning strongly towards Macaulay. Hopefully its the right decision and if anyone has any comments please post them
