NYU Financial Aid Beginning to Seem Unrealistic... Help?!

Op is a citizen that attends an international school in china. This means that she would only be eligible for Pell, university aid, and loans. I am shocked that there are not loans as part of her financial aid package.

OP says

IF she maxed out on loans in her name, we are talking about ~ 9500 (4000 perkins and 5500 in stafford loans). Her dad would have to take out a 10.5 as a PLUS loan just to cover tuition and room.

As I stated in a previous post, food, travel and misc. expenses (including some type of health insurance to cover student while she is abroad) is not included in the 20k… Op would have to come up with an additional 10-12k if she is staying for the year.

I think you are greatly OVERestimating what an English degree can bring. Even if you are able to move abroad and become a literature teacher, expat teachers make decent money but not the big bucks. Certainly not enough money to repay $80K in loans.

I saw the post title and thought how obvious can it be??

Op, read this post on the same forum that is going on right now. “Living Rent free with parents before graduate school” Get a glimpse of what your life could be like 6 years from now with massive amounts of loans. Granted, that poster has a unique family situation but she is stuck in it somewhat because of her loans. Having a lot of loans will limit your choices in life down the road.
