NYU Financial Aid vs FAFSA

I have a question. When you are applying for NYU ED, the financial aid package they give you, does that include FAFSA (government money) or do you add that on, once you fill out the FAFSA form (avalible jan 1st 2011)?

To kind of sum it up, is FAFSA the same as NYU Financial Aid?

nasali,

I am not familiar with the ED FA process, but I know that for NYU RD applicants, anyone wishing to receive financial aid and SCHOLARSHIP consideration must fill out the FAFSA.

NYU uses the FAFSA to look at the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) before they give aid. FAFSA completion is also a requirement for consideration for all scholarships received at NYU. I cannot quite remember. The FAFSA comes out around 1/1/11 or 1/2/11, so I do not see how they can require completion for ED candidates. Unless they ask you to use estimates based on the 2010 FAFSA. Someone with ED FA application experience please chime in.

I just know FAFSA is a requirement every year for all receiving FA and scholarships.

However, cautionary note: While other more generous schools may really fulfill the part that is not met by the EFC, NYU appears to frequently give admitted students less than what you would expect from say, a low EFC (meaning the family has to contribute less).

I believe FAFSA is only the vehicle for determining your financial need.
You fill out the FAFSA so the NYU FA office can determine if you qualify for any government grants and loans based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA responses and numbers.

Nasali-
The expected financial aid package for EDI applicants does not include anything from FASFA. Once you submit your application, if you indicated you’re applying for financial aid, they’ll send you a form you have to complete with family income, tax exemptions, etc. from the previous year. They use this info to send you an estimated financial aid award with your acceptance package (assuming you’re accepted). Since those comes out around December 15th, you then have to fill out the FASFA form whenever it comes out (January 1st), and NYU uses that to determine your official financial aid award. As long as the numbers are similar to those you provided on the initial financial aid application, your official award should be very similar to the estimated one they provide you with your acceptance package.

Hayley,

That was a very clear and informative response of the procedures for NYU EDI applicants in regards to FA application.
